Just bought a boxed P3-1000EB SL4MF ( or should I say P3-750E ? HA!) bundled with Soyo SY-7VCA2 from Fry's ($299).
Looked at database on chip, and while it's not exactly a stellar OC from the 133 point it's not too bad - any opinions before I break it out of the box ? Should I keep it or return it ? I am running a BE6-2 right now, should I get a sloket and test the chip on BE6-2 or should I go for the Soyo/P3 combo ?
The BE6 is a proven winner for overclocking, so I would definitely give it a try. The BE6 was number 2 behind the BF6 on the cpu database for overclocking, when it was compiled a while back, I believe.

I've bought 2 of the same PIII 1 GHZ CPU's in the last couple of weeks and they could both do at least 155 FSB.
Here are the particulars on each chip:
1st chip: Made in Phillipines-Week 01-Pack Date 02/23/2001. This CPU would run up 156 FSB on a CUSL2 at 1.95V. Was able to loop 3DMark2000 for at least 24 hours. Also tried it on a BE6-II ver2 with MSI slocket and I got somewhat sporadic results. I was able to boot into Windows at 160 FSB at 2.0V and things appeared to be stable. I was even able to run 3DMark2000. After about 30 minutes though, the system just froze. I then backed it down to 155 FSB at 1.95V and things appeared to be much stabler but I would get the same freeze ups. I think the slocket just doesn't work that well at higher voltages and higher FSB's.
2nd chip(just got it Friday): Made in Malaysia-Week 03-Pack Date 03/15/2001. I'm running this chip at 160 FSB/1200 MHZ as we speak at 1.95V on a CUSL2. I haven't tested it that extensively yet but it appears to be pretty stable(run Prime95 OK). Mushking Rev 3 (2 - 128mb sticks) are running fine at 2-2-2, 5/7. It would not boot at 1.9V so I hope 1.95 will be enough juice for it...don't rally want to go any higher.

Just throw it straight in to the SY-7VCA2. The 7VCA2 is one of the best 694X boards around. The BE62 on the otherhand might not tolarate the high FSB speeds of EB overclocking(most BX boards don't go too much beyond 140FSB without stability issues).

I had to up the voltage up to 2.0V and it is doing much better. However, it will only run 3DMark2000 for about an hour before it crashes back to the desktop. I'm using a PEP 66 so I doubt that I'd be able to do much better with cooling. I may try to get an an adapter so that I can use an 80mm fan on the PEP.
The PEP66 is a great cooler, but it is dictated by case cooling. I had several "computer store" fans in my server case, and changed them for higher volume industrial fans, and the cpu temps dropped 5 degrees.
The moral here is that it takes more than an Alpha to insure good cooling. Try blowing a household fan into the side of the case, and see if your results are better- if so, you NEED more case cooling.

Yep yep.. agree with Tim there again. I leave both of my computer case sides open and blow "HoneyWell" Wind tunnel designed fan(20 bucks) and it's been used for 2 years and it's dead!! it used to cool the hell out of my case. Now I just use house hold fan to blow at one side of my case in the day time and summer time.
