Automatic Hard Drive Defraging Software Executive Software Diskeeper..

I was not sure where this would fit. Its kinda software, kinda hardware, kinda microsoft.

So here goes.

I got a Program called Executive Software Diskeeper. I installed on my Windows XP Pro, with SP1 machine. The main drive is a 120gig Maxtor SATA Drive. This program seems to work awesome. It has a smart defrag option. You just set it and it waits until it sees no disk activity for a long time and then does a defrag. It remembers that time for future and tries again at that time. If there is activity it wont do it and waits. I fired it up about a month ago and I checked my drives today and it said there were less than 1% fragmented. I thought that was totally cool. I have went around and installed it on all the machines and my server in my house. (total of 8 drives to worry about)

Has anyone else used this software and what did you think of it.

I've been using it for 2 years. It's a great little program and if you use the Boottime defrag you'll get a more through defrag(Every month or so to keep top performance) I do it every 4 months. I think this should go in Software tho....

i love this program. My dads computer was hellish, P3 celeron 667mhz. 64MB of ram. Windows ME. I dropped 256mb of ram in there as soon as i could. Now it runs pretty smoothly but it still needed more than windows defragmenter. So i set it to run diskeeper every night to defrag. Now webpages load slowly because of the slow dialup not because of the slow computer. My moms computer, it was hopeless, after about 2 years, bootime defrag and nightly defrags were not enough. even though it has 384MB of ram the HDD had just been too overrun and gone too long with out defragmentation. It will get the format.

I would definatly say diskkeeper is as good of a performance upgrade as going from 256MB of ram to 512MB for gerneral windows use. Gaming the extra ram does alot more than diskeeper, but for windows operation it is great.

EDIT: I am running 8. I have a question aobut smart schedule, it will not interupt you if your working? is this correct?

From what I've seen it stops it's work when it notices high HDD activity.

I haven't used it with desktops yet, but on larger servers only.

Certainly keeps seek times down and stability high.

I just started using it about two weeks ago, really like it. I set it up to defrag while i am at school whenever it decides my drives need to. Never gets in the way, and my drives are allways defragmented, cool.

I have heard some people say that defraging makes almost no difference on a home computer, is there any truth to this? I have heard lots of conflicting stuff... unless proven wrong though, i will continue to defrag.

1st off Degraging makes a diffrence on any computer that is turned on.

It makes more of a diffrence on a computer that is really "USED" if it is just used for email and internet that degraging is less important.

However if you are reading this board you probably have a list of 20 or so apps that you install on a new machine, and randomly on a wim download a couple to try out and then dump them when you get bored with them. You also probably have a few gig of "personal" files that you move around videos music and such.

Oh do you do any gamming by chance, there is another thing that can frag a hard drive up.

Defraging a drive is a good thing to do regardless of how hard you use your computer.

Yep I put this program on my family computer since the windows defrag program could only get to 7% and then it would reset. Diskeeper did it first try. Awsome program.

It is now in my list of GOT TO HAVE IT, APPS. It will go on every new system I set up.

I use it and its a excellent application... by 2 pence on that software :)...
