I am new to overclocking my PC I have very very little background in doing this but Id like to take this P.O.S. that I am using to its full potiontial if it has anything beyond the chicken chasing the corn running on the treadmill.

I have seen the elaborate Cooling systems out there and in these forums, I dont want a huge gain but Id like to know what I can push it too.

My specs are:
P4 2.2 Ghz 2x 133 FSB
1 GB of PC 2100
GF4 tti 4400 128mb

If I didnt give enough spec let me know and Ill try to find out more.

Cheers KO :D

Hello KO one of the best T2 cappers that is out there and helped me bring home the flag many times. I hope you learn more and read more here then enough to take away the passion for playing tribe2 and enjoy the passion of playing with the hardware that you play T2 with.

I can say this In order to help you out you need to remove the HSF and get the stepping off the cpu. Be sure to reapply some kind of thermal compound. Also what mobo and power supply are you using would be helpful.

P.S. I hope you enjoy this place I know I do.

And as allways,

Welcome KO. You don't need to remove the heatsink yet. Just download CPU-Z for free and run that program. It'll tell you what the default vcore is and what stepping it is... it'll either be a B0 (1.5v) or C1 stepping (1.525v). I've seen 2.2 P-4 CPUs run 2.4 to around 3 gig depending on the stepping.

The thing that puzzles me is the "2X 133 FSB" thing? If it's a 2.2 P-4, then it's a 100 FSB (400 system bus). Maybe you told us the wrong speed? Could it be a 2.26? Those are 133 FSB (533 system bus). Again, CPU-Z will tell us your default CPU speed.

But... we are getting ahead of ourselves here. The very first thing you need to do is find out what motherboard you have. That's the key to whether you can overclock. Not all motherboards have adjustable FSB that allows overclocking. Find out more info and report back.

Ah ha, you indeed have a 2.26 CPU (133 FSB or 533 system bus) and it's a B0 stepping. The C1 stepping would of been better, but you should still get a little more out of that sucker anyway. Perhaps 2.4 to 2.6 gig. I say let's set your goal to 150 FSB which will give you 2.55 gig.

Your motherboard appears to be a MSI model MS-6398E. That means it has an i845-E chipset and should be overclockable, so that's good. Looks like you are ready to start your overclocking adventure. You probably should check load CPU temps first and see how you are doing in that regard.

I don't have much experience with MSI mobos, but if you go into the BIOS, you should find a menu with CPU settings. First, look to see if it's possible to lock the PCI/AGP.

Now look for a way to change the FSB (frequency). You might have to set the CPU clock speed to "user define" first to ungray the frequency settings. Raise the FSB a little at a time and test for stability. Maybe start out at 135 FSB (2.3 gig) and try 5 MHz increments from there.

If you have trouble and nobody else with MSI experience can help, I'll download the manual and help walk you through this. Good luck.

Talked to Jonspd,

About getting a new HSF Ill play with getting this cranked a little higher, in small increments at a time. I was kinda hoping to see if it was possible to get a stable running OC with a maybe 3 ghz or close to it from what I am currently running it at.

Thanks for the help Ill keep you updated.

Cheers KO :D

There are some of those B0 stepping 2.26's that indeed hit 2.8 to 3 gig, but you need a good CPU, good cooling, and good luck. Also, I don't know if that MSI mobo allows you to lock the PCI bus to default. If not, that will limit you. Good luck in your quest for speed.
