View Full Version : Ok just some questions I need to get cleared up.
I am running a SoYo 6ba+ IV with a P3 450@566 Katmai CPU at 2.0v(standard)
I have 2x64=128mb RAM which is crappy but hey, I got the second chip free.
I clock the thing at 566 with a three fan large heatsink design which it runs very cool so I know it could go further than it is now.
I remove the crap PC100 chip and I can hit 600mhz at CAS 2 but with it in I crash at windows startup. Now I can boot up at 600mhz at CAS 3 with both chips but it's not 100% stable.
Now for my question, is CAS 2 worth 34mhs less? Or would CAS 3 @ 600mhz be a better option? I can't spare any money now for a new setup of ram because I am looking into saving for an entire new Motherboard and CPU and RAM combo soon, probably a 700e in a Soyo with the 815e chipset, but that's beyond the point. Well anyways, thanks in advance.

ok here's the rough numbers..
CAS333 @ 600 = CAS222 @ 566. They are very close performance.. maybe you still might get witty little bitty more performance on the CAS222@ 566. other than that.. you really gain nothing much between those option. They are pretty much equal. I still recommend CAS222 though due to better overal memory timing.

I asked something similiar to that recently in the MEMORY section. Check it out.

Thanks for the thoughtful support, Shadow m8tty
I read it and yeah.. that's what I thought.. with cas2 being much more throughput than the cas3 with some higher mhz. But if we look at it.. it's just the memory bandwidth benchy.. not other hardware spec.. just the memory itself is very high performer.. ya agree with me?

Well, you need to remember that most everything depends on the system memory, so you do get better thruput in most devices with cas2, as opposed to a slightly higher mhz with cas3..so bottom line is the faster you have your ram running, the quicker things will occurr :-)

In using your rig other than running benchmarks, you will not notice the diff. :)
Hehe, I read up and saw the differences and did my own benching of the thing, well it's appearent that CAS 2 has to be my choice, but I can stick with the Duron 600 on the Sandra tests on CPU and Multimedia but I can crank out more than the duron at 600mhz but the choice seems obvious to me nowm, so 566 @ CAS 2 for now :) Thanks for the info guys, I really appreciate it.
Ohh well, I am starting to think this Katmai 450 has hit it's final pace time for a higher performance Coppermine! Maybe a 700e if I ever get the money. Boy I hate being broke, bills are outrageous these days, oh well. I was hoping to get a 256mb Pc133 chip for ram but when I saw the latest Gas bill, that dream fell down to hell and back. 270 dollars for gas prices.. Sheesh, anyways enough about how much life sucks, back to Need For Speed 5, maybe if I overclock my Voodoo 3 some more eheheheh
