Well, just scored myself a blistering fast U160 IBM 10K SCSI disk, and currently looking for a controller.
My question just is, can I use the Ultra 320 disk on an Ultra160 controller? As I wont be able to get 320 mb/s on 32 bit PCI anyhow, its just a question if it will run at all.
Cheers, Flix
Sure, it will run fine and about the only performance difference would be a small amount due to the inability to burst data at 320MB/s. They're fully backwards compatible and I have a couple running this way as well. I would recommend getting U320 cables and terminators as the price difference is negligible and allows for faster interfaces if you upgrade the card.

You mean a U160 disk on a U320 controller?
Either way I guess, it doesn't matter they're backwards compatible. The setup will just operate at whichever pieces slower speed.

Nooo.. A U320 disk on a U160 controller.
But you've answered my question, and I'll be using the U320 cable and terminatior that came with it ;-)
So all I need is the controller. I hope to find a used one...
Wheeee..

The LSIU160s are usually inexpensive and give god results. I've seen them for 38.00 at neweg before.

Rats, those LSIU's are PCI-X, 64 bit PCI :p For server boards only.

You mean I can actually use a 64 bit PCI-X board in a standard 32 bit slot? The print looks a lot larger though?!?!?
Funky..

They are, but they aren't.
I have a LSI in a 32/33 PCI slot of my IC7 and it runs fine. Completely downward compatible, strange though it may seem.

VERY strange indeed.
And hell if it wont run I can plug it into one my servers at work and let the company pay for it.
Thanks,
Flix
