View Full Version : W2K Random Reboots

As I've been trying to back up all of my data off my hard drive so I don't lose anything if the drive gets corrupted when I try and push my Celeron II 600 up to 112fsb, I've been encountering more and more bizarre problems- most notably, Windows 2000 randomly rebooting itself without warning, and applications ceasing to work- most commonly, I try and open up the "My Computer" , I get a dialog box that Explorer has caused an error and that it will be shut down- and the system basically reloads, since Explorer is like the core of WinBlows (not quite, but still...). The first few times I encountered this was the first time that I had really pushed the CPU up to 100% usage for a while- TARing 500MB .avi files at maximum multimedia compression so I could fit them on less CD-RWs, so I figured that it was probably due to my processor not being completely stable at the speed I had it at- 600@927- so yesterday I pulled the CPU off the board's Socket and put it on the MSI-6905 I just got in, set the voltage to 1.75 (it's a cC0 Celeron) and put it on the MoBo's slot and bumped the fsb back down to 100Mhz, and it is still having problems- almost more than before.

What I'm wondering is, is this sounding like indeed the CPU isn't happy at this speed, or that something is screwy with W2K on my computer? I did have some problems with my install CD-ROMs when I installed it last time, but everything seemed to be running alright. I'm questioning whether the CPU is really to blame because it frequently crashes when doing largely non-CPU intensive things, like the aforementioned My Computer problem, and downloading file from the internet (it took me like 3 tries and almost as many hours to download the ISO for VectorLinux for my laptop....). Anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

did you install win2k at an o'c speed or the std speed, sometimes the os will
not install properly if the cpu is overclocked. I would do a complete reinstall
because win2k is a really stable os compared to the others.

Ashyu-senpai!

if youve just installed win then i suggest start all over again! and do you have the 4in1 drivers in?

The most recent install was done with the CPU overclocked... I didn't realize that might have an effect. I guess I'll reinstall the OS again with the CPU set at standard 600 and see if it behaves more nicely (and after thoroughly cleaning my install CD....). I am running the 4-in-1 drivers, Asuka-san, but I'm debating whether I'll reinstall them after this install- I'm not sure they're doing a whole lot. Although I don't like having to do an OS reinstall, it probably is my best option- Outlook is also a bit screwed up, as the Palm Desktop can't get it to synchonize with it. I have to admit to still considering reverting back to W98- when I had both '98 and 2K on my older computer, there were some video codecs that just wouldn't work in 2K for some reason, and my MPEG output card doesn't work under 2K (it's too old, and they never wrote NT versions of the drivers). I'm not sure that 2K has that much of an advantage for me :p The only problem will be converting the NTFS partitions back to FAT32 without losing the data on them...
