View Full Version : Did that dude REALLY do 'that' to a new G5?

I was just wondering if you guys think that news story and those pics are for real? I still can't believe what I saw so I just had to join and ask.
Did that REALLY happen or is it just some publicity stunt for something?

Hi, Cyrix.
I think the story first became widespread here:
http://www.macminute.com/2004/01/27/pcg5
There's a reference to it at the ocforums news section. It's about half-way down.

I may be a pc person myself but if I got a new G5 I would play with it to max rather than change it to a hack pc. Interesting idea though.
I mean the most I would do with it was ditch OSX and put Gentoo on it. ;)
Although I do think OSX is a nice OS:D

I wouldent waste the parts of it, although I dont like macs I would sure find a use for a free one.
it looks like crap now, and comeone, the Mac parts were way better than whats in there now.
Im not a Mac person at all, but that is just sad

Man, if you want to find the biggest idiot this side of the milky way, this Andy guy would be it. I mean who the hell in their right mind would rip out a $3K system and put some out dated PC crap in its place? Seriously, this guy needs psychiatric help pronto. He makes me sick.
And the worst part is, he's a freaking amateur posing like a pro. What, no water cooling?
Are the hard drives on a mac like unformatable? whats stopping you from installing XP on it..?

What a shame to see such a nice setup thrown by the wayside for such a old setup. It may have been a Mac, but it was better than what he put in there.
I would like to be his friend though, since he gave all of the parts he took out to his friend for free

Mac and PC use the same HD, but the system architecture's different, software and hardware, so you can't just install XP on a Mac. That's like saying you want to install Panther on an AMD system.

He said how it made his mac friend sick, i hate macs but i would have not been his friend anymore after that...
The wrost part is he gave away 3000 worth of parts to his friend .... idiot... PLus the case is now so empty and crappy, and the green cathodes are the only real mod.... and there ugly, he coulda sent me the whole system and i woulda bought him a damn dell....
I just saw that ARTICLE SAYS HES FROM HERE oveclockers.com so now we'll get a bad name.....

yeah wouldn'ta cut the g5 up for a pc and I'm def not a mac person.
I use it mostly for Internet, ripping music/DVDs and ****ing off my friend.
USE THE MAC FOR IT. Music stuff is what macs do well. The "unmodded" mac looks better than his pc thing anyway. now if the mac had been bad...

Amazing... Stupidity have reached new hights.
If my parents gave me such a gift they would have been ****ed off if I messed it like that. If I then gave the 'value' away for free... They would have killed me for sure.
(After reading this thread I got kind of sad!)

01-28-04, 05:07 PM
I thought about selling it, but my parents would be upset with me. After all, this was a very expensive gift and it meant a lot to them to give to me."
So instead he hacks the crap out of it and gives it away for free.
To each his own I guess. If someone bought me a MAC I'd be greatful, they're not that terrible I just don't like the price tag.
Hey Andy, if you get a hold of another mac I will trade you my athlon system for it any day...

I dunno guys. If I was given a Dual G5. The first thing I would do is gut it and ebay it. The case like his would stay, and I would cram a new PC in it.
I see where his ideas are comming from, but he could have taken steps to make the project a little less vulnerable to critscism. But then again, I mod everything anyway.
craneage2001
01-28-04, 05:13 PM
As much as I dislike Apples (give me a right click please...), the G5 is one wicked machine. Due to the projects I do at work (Altivec optimizations for existing apps), I am forced to use a G5. With 3G of ram, that thing just cruises. Mmm, so nice with dual LCDs... Most Apples deserve to be hacked apart, but definitely not a G5...

I'm not a big Mac fan, but I mean c'mon dude. We're talking about 3 grand worth of parts. 3 grand. You can buy maybe 5 cheap Dell's for that price. My parents would be so ticked off at me that they wouldn't talk to me for years. There's gotta be another use for those parts though. Can't you get SETI or folding@home going on that thing? Seems to me like a big waste. A better thing he could have done was put the G5 parts into a regular PC case. Then it doesn't seem as much of a waste.

I'd hate to be "Andy" now so much critiscm, which he partly deserves for doing that, but I know I never get rid of parts unless they are broken, or i need money, and certainly would never get rid of 3k of parts no matter what they were.
AFIsoldier

Mugen1516
01-28-04, 06:56 PM
Case modding is cool and all, but I have to say what Andy did is just plain stupid and wasteful. Basically his parents spent $3000 on him for him to have a G5 case that he basically f***ed up anyway and he gave the parts away!
Ultam8um
01-28-04, 07:32 PM
He says he wants to get an athlon 64, COULDN"T HE HAVE BOUGHT ONE IF HE SOLD THE G5?!? ******...
Cyrix_2k
01-28-04, 08:03 PM
That's terrible! At the least he could've installed a PC in the mac case and left the mac in the case to coexist with the PC. That would actually be kinda cool. And C'mon, that G5 is better than a DELL! And Panther's a cool OS too.
And no matter what, that G5 would outpreform that Athlon he installed in there. I don't have a mac because of the price tag. If someone bought/gave me a mac, I'd use it, and I'd be happy too.
Andy,
If you want to give away free stuff, feel free to give it to me!

Yes, Yellow Dog Linux works on Macs...
What's with the "if he just wanted to rip CD's and surf the net, he should've kept the mac."??? People don't buy G5's to just surf the net, people. There's an equivalent for every application out there. Nor do 90% of Mac users actually use that one button mouse.
I guess I'm just an all around computer geek with 2 macs and 1 PC and can't really identify where the true stigma lies in macs. It used to be OS 9 and prior, which is justifiable, to an extent, considering they were just as unreliable as Win95/98.
And reemphasizing the price issue, take a stab at an Alienware or a Falcon Northwest.
Back to the point in case, that guy is a 100% bona fide dumbass. Just think: If this guy would get his hands on a Cray, he'd still strip it down to an Athlon.

IMHO, this guy appears to be about 14-16 years old, and was ticked about not getting the Dell he wanted for X-Mas, so the only reason he did this was to get back at them. It's the only possible rationalization I can come up with for anyone to actualy be this stupid....

whoever posted that thing about the coexisting PC-MAC system, that would be great. if you are going to put a microAT mobo, you might as well LEAVE THE MAC inside anyways. fitting everything in would be a modder's challenge too.

I can understand the desire to gut a G5 for the case and put a blazing fast dual Opteron system in there with RAID, 2gb of ECC RAM, and a 9800XT........
but to strip out the componenets, give them away, and replace it with a low end budget system is pure insanity. a 2200?!?! Cripes man, you just blew a $3k computer, and replaced it with $300 in parts!! And what tops it off is that his parents don't know he gutted it.......but I ask how would they know if he had sold it??
Actually, what REALLY tops it off is that he wanted a DELL in the first place! My opinion is that he was so angry that he didn't get a dell that he took the time to learn how to build computers in order to do this project, because NOBODY in their right mind who knows much about computers would do something like this.
bah......man, I'll give you my e-mail and you can contact me the next time you have 3k worth of parts to give away.....

Exactly what I was thinking. We really need to find out who this kid is so we can clue in the parents a little. ;) Of course they probably have more money than brains like their son.
What a spoiled, ungrateful kid. Heck, if someone offered me their new G5 for $800 I'd be all over it, let alone being given one as a present.
<Offtopic>
The sole reason I don't use Macs that A) I'm a gamer and B) even still I'd be willing to make sacrifices if I could only *afford* one (that's more powerful that what I currently have).
.::| M |::. All the Mac power users I know (which is more than you'd think, because I'm @ an art school) use 2-button mice, but I'd say at *least* half of the Mac users I know still stick with the 1 button mouse. Even if their current mouse breaks, they shell out another $80 for the Pro Mouse. This has *nothing* to do with this particular discussion, because as in the PC world, not everyone is a brain surgeon ;)
Oh, and velcro *is* a legitimate way to secure a PSU (just not in this case). :D

to be fair, I think ANY of us would gut it if it meant selling the parts and buying a maxed out dual system with water cooling......
I know I would. If I got a G5, I would part it out and sell the stuff, then mod the case like mad and use the money for buying a decked out system.
But to give the parts away is just pure madness. I honestly feel saddened that the MAC article mentioned oc.com.....that means that we have to live that down.

What it comes down to is this kid does not know the value of money. He is one of those kids that get everything handed to him on a silver platter and he does not have to work for anything. Therefore he has no problems with ruining a brand new 3k computer.
It not so bad that he gutted a Mac case and put a PC in there... Its what he did with the $$$ in parts from the G5... Even if he sold the parts that would of been ok.
If he had put the G5 in some another case as another MOD great! But to give that **** away in pieces, what a waste. You know any friend of this ****** probably does not have what it takes upstairs to reassemble the G5...
He needs a wake-up call, I wish his parents would find out and make him get a job to pay back the cost of that computer. Lets see how long it takes him to earn 3k flipping burgers, because thats where he will be because he has no skills beyond recieving $$$ from his parents.

Hehe! That would have been fun. Flipping burgers sounds too nice. He should try planting forrest(very young trees). When I was 14 I did that. I got 0.7NOK(aprox. 10 cents) for each tree. To pay of the mac he would have to plant 30000 trees..hehehe! That is not done in a day!
If his parents actually did have to save up for a long time to get him this computer, and he did that, if i was his parents, i WOULD kill the ****** guy, this is sad, he could have at least asked them to exchange it for a PC and explained that MACs are not what he was looking for, it would have hurt his parents, but this would kill them if they found out what he did.

I am no longer considering this. it is one of those things that are soooooo sick that i can't think about them.
Like, i saw on E! that michael jackson has a doll collection, and he flew to london in the concorde and paid an extra ticket for his doll to sit next him. that, and he spends 30k a month as training fees for his pets. i am putting this kid on that level, at wich point i can only shrug and think "oh well".

I also wonder how his friend had an empty G5 case. Its not like someone moved their g5 into a new case as its not possible. Maybe if the friend worked at a computer shop and it was totaly dead, but you would still think that when they repaired it they would use the same case. Somthing just seems odd about this to me...

01-30-04, 07:44 PM
Ok, I'll step in on his defence here.
He actually replied to my email to him, and we chatted back and forth for a few. He bought the G5 case off of ebay. The pics of a whole G5 he got from his friend who has one, which is where he got the idea to buy a G5 case and build a PC, the whole joke thing was orriginaly on his "Mac Lover" friend, but then he submitted it to OC.com just to see what they thought about it.
The pics with the junk hardware are just some old hardware he had sitting around that he stuck in there for the pics. He said that he's going to be building a good PC into the G5 case, and that he's going to post the real-deal mods into the Alternative Modding section once he gets some work done on it.
Guess we'll just have to wait and see what he finaly does with the G5 case for real.

01-30-04, 08:02 PM
That does seem reasonable. It was a joke that went to far, but this guy is not evil. I bet he can make a cool looking pc out of that, it is a nise case. Can't wate to see what it becomes.
I'm with everyone else. I don't like MACS that much but really. I do like Macs for photo or video editing though. So glad the Highschool I'm going to next year already has about 50 G4s for their digital editing classes and may be getting G5s to replace them by the time I'm there.

Take a look here: http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=2473428 .
Oh yes! MacWorld agreed that PC's (i.e. P4's & AMD's) are better by doing the tests on a "real" machines instead of some Dell or HP ones.
With the kind of reaction he got from all the Uber mac Dorks out there who "cried or got physically ill" from just looking at a picture of a computer, I say Kudos to him for pulling the prank.
I think maybe I will get a G5, gut it, sell off the parts and publish the pics of a dual XP2400 system inside of it doing all the things a mac should do but doing them right.

It looks like that dude really DIDN'T do 'that' to a G5 after all. Phew!!! It was almost too unbelievable to believe.
Anyway, it'd be interesting to see the actual stats of how many hits the article actually got.
It'd also be interesting to see the number of new members to this site since the article appeared.
Even though Andy left the unsuspecting editorial staff a flaming turd at the doorstep, I would bet this already-large site grew some because of it.
...to digress.
I am both a Mac and a PC user and this is one of the few times where we've collectively generally both agreed on anything. It's very interesting how this brought two polarized groups into unison ----- at least for a little while. ;)
Cheers, Andy. You did more than you imagined by pulling your little prank. You've had your fifteen minutes. Now scoot on by. :)

I cannot believe how fast or how far it has spread on the internet. There are an amazing number of people who are emotionally attached to inanimate objects such as computers. Mac fans seem to be much worse that I ever expected.
He has a point here. Mac people are wayyyy too obsessed with defending their machines. This whole ordeal is just evidence of that.
If someone ever wants to put a mac in a pc case, people just shrug and get over it... probably because they realize how pointless it is, but I think that the reason mac people are so upset over this is that Andy may actually have a point... the new G5 case is very nice and would be much better off running a windows setup.
I think the only one who should be blamed here is the editor who posted the article, knowing the response it would generate. Andy said himself that he didn't think the article would ever be posted, and it goes to show the quality of overclockers.com that any dope can take some cheesy photos and write an exaggerated article and send it in and get it posted without overclockers.com ever verifying that anything in the article is true. Maybe I'll go write an article about how I hit 8ghz with my 2500...

Well again, we all believed him off the bat. Why wouldnt the editor? My "prank" alarm never went off during the day or so it was up.

Wow I'm just glad that turned out to be a joke, I thought it was pretty bad to do something like that to his parents. Any way I guess that I have to admit that it was a very well executed joke, and I'm glad he came clean.

Checkpoint Charlie, isn't Steve McNair from Olive Branch?
As stated earlier, I am a mac user and my home and also at my place of business. I don't hate PC's.
I'm just curious why people say they hate macs. Is it just a cool off-the-cuff remark kind of like how some people say the hate Bill Gates, or George W?
I just ask for a quantifiable reason why the mac has gotten on your bad side.
I won't rebutt your statement. I will not argue with your statement.
I will not get in an argument because a platform war is not fruitful.
I will answer a question only if I'm asked. I just want a little insight into this.
Hopefully, people's opinions have been built over the last 20 years of using macs on-and-off. That is why I'd really like to better understand the animosity against macs.
I'm more interested in recent bad experiences with macs.
I appreciate a good PC just like anyone else. I'm perplexed.
Please enlighten me. I'd really like to get to the bottom of this.
If you wouldn't mind, also list your experience with the mac, and specifically what the main problem(s) you experienced that drove you over the edge.
seriously, and respectfully

I cannot vouch for all PC users, only myself.
I don't dislike Mac's the machine. I just dislike what I call the Mac stigma. Meaning the attitude that comes along with many, even most of the Mac users out there. It tends to be a kind of elitist attitude, much like you get from linux using network guys with "Unix Beards", but much more ravenous. I don't really blame them though. Apple computers and Steve Jobs have done an incredible job in creating and marketting a pop culture icon wrapped up in white nylon and clear perspex. I mean you should see these guys at Mac World, its almost embarrasing. Not only do stigma'd macsters believe in their machines, they seem to almost want to die for them come hell or high water. Theres no arguing with stigma'd macsters, if you don't use a mac, youre an idiot.
Now from a hardware standpoint, I'm going to be the first to step in line and say that macs are incredible with multimedia programs that have been optimized for mac archetecture. I mean they are blazing fast. Though you try and compare gaming on a mac, or the mac servers and scientific workstations to PC's, lets just face it, brute force PC archetecture has held an advantage for a long time. I mean it's been just within the past year or so that high bandwidth DDR memory has found a home inside a mac machine. I also cant justify the proprietary parts and high pricetags that the majority of macs carry.
If I was a mac user, personally I would be extremely angry with those individuals who seem to dirty up the image of the mac platform to an extent where enthusiasts like me dont want a thing to do with them.

Heh heh, I just wandered into this thread, to see what it was about. Thought it kind of funny that someone would actually do something like this. What struck me odd was how everyone jumped on the poor guy BEFORE they knew it was a joke.
[Rant on]
What's the big deal, If this person HAD actually done this to a G5, it was his to do it to. People calling him stupid and passing judgment on him for doing something he wanted to do, no matter what it was, is more stupid than the actual idea of cutting up a G5.
Even though it turned out to be a gag, and a good one at that, it showed just what kind of character most people who responded negatively have. Think about it, everyone here on this site has modded something in their life time, or will go on to mod something eventually, because they CAN. No one expects to be ripped on and called names because of what they want to do to something that they OWN, no matter how insane it may be. The comments about him being some spoiled rich kid who didn't care that it was a gift were pointless. How many people here have taken something they were given, and modified it? I've seen alot of people who's parents have gone out and bought them a new high end video card...or motherboard/ cpu setup, just to go on and OC it, not caring that they may destroy it. It's a case of the pot calling the kettle black.
Again, it was just a joke, but the comments and remarks made towards this fellow were not, if anyone should be appologizing for this, it should be all those who misjudged this guy, and thought him "an idiot" long before they even knew what was really going on, not him to everyone for playing a joke, on HIS friend no less, NOT anyone else.
[/Rant off]
Great joke though, I'm sure many a Mac user's hearts jumped into their throats...heh heh
Just my $.02

Im not saying he shouldn't have posted it because it was fake, Im saying he shouldn't have posted it because he knew it would ruffle some people's feathers... kinda like MTV had a responsibility not to play "it's getting hot in here, so take off all your clothes" in front of half of America...but that's just my opinion.

While reading Wired.com articles on my PDA, I saw that they had done a write-up on this whole incident. A somewhat interesting read. The article can be found here (http://wired.com/news/mac/0,2125,62157,00.html?tw=wn_tophead_3)

Ditto. You pretty much dictated my feelings on Macs exactly, but I am just not elloquent (sp?) enough to spell it all out as you did.
