Yeah, have a look through the thread Sirius posted ;)
If you're going to be using your PC for gaming, or anything substantial then you shouldnt put in any less than 512mb. About 1024MB (2x512 sticks, referred to as 1GB) is a good amount, not many programs will require more than that, but again, it depends what you'll be using your computer for. Also, I would recommend going with a matched memory pair of two sticks of RAM. Don't go with four - ie: if you wanted 1GB, get 2x512, rather than 4x256 sticks. If you intend to overclock then 4 sticks will be hell.
Go with some nice high speed memory (anything above pc3000) and look for good manufacturers. RAM is something you definately dont want to cut costs on because if you do it could give you lots of problems later on.
Some nice manufacturers to look out for are: Mushkin, Kingston, Crucial, OCZ, GeIL. Of which my personal favourites are Mushkin and OCZ.
Im not sure how much you know about timings, but basically the lower the better. You'll see a series of 3-4 numbers ie: 2-2-2-5 or 2,5-3-3-7.
Good RAM is RAM that can attain high speeds (DDR-500 or whatever) and still keep tight timings. If you try to overclock bad RAM then your timings will go so high it wouldnt yield a loss in performance. If you dont intend to OC, then go with some nice PC-3500 or PC-3700.
Unfortunately you've just missed the Mushkin line with BH-5 chips as they've been discontinued indefinately. But mushkin have brought out a new low latency line of PC-3200 ( www.mushkin.com ) with stock timings of 2-2-2. These are pretty new and I havent seen any benchmarks yet, or how they OC, so im not sure, but they look like very good chips (they have CH-5 chips).
Another good RAM is: OCZ PC-3700 revision 2.
I'm also looking to purchase new RAM at the moment as I can no longer find the Mushkin pc-3500 lvl2 that i wanted :(.
The 3 im looking at are:
1Gb kit DDR PC-3200 Special 2-2-2 Dual Channel - Mushkin
OR
1Gb kit OCZ DDR PC-3500 / 433mhz / Dual Channel / Enhanced Latency Series
OR
1Gb kit EL DDR PC4200 Dual Channel - OCZ
Not too sure about the last one, i'll probably go with the Mushkin, although im not sure yet.
Heres a link to the thread that I posted asking for advice, since you're looking aswell it might help you out ;) and theres also a great post from Hepp that explains the Mushkin and OCZ memory well.
*EDIT* forgot to put the link in  http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=266264
Hope this helps. Good Luck:D
