View Full Version : switch to AMD?
i have been checking out the AMD scene... you can go way faster for cheaper. they are gettting 1.3 to 1.5 gigs out of 1 to 1.3 gig t-birds. what do you guys think?

Well, although I am new here, I do know that T-Bird's and Durons are much easier to OC than Pentiums. Check out http://firingsquad.gamers.com They have an article aobut OC'ing the 1Ghz AMD's CPU's.

curse you for posting this in the Intel section! Blastphemy I tell you! (or however that's spelled) hehe
Truthfully you'll go faster with an AMD, but you'll sink a good bit of your savings into cooling rigs as AMD runs considerably hotter and needs more than just air cooling to get big benefits from it. I still think Intel P III's are higher quality for reliability, but AMD's may be a bit more fun to play with.
And before anyone argue's......why do you think this site is run on Intel processors and not AMD?

Because it was built when AMD sucked? Just kidding Shadow! :)

Ummm...is it because Skip hasn't found a good server board for the T-birds he has laying around?

I just jumped ship a couple of months ago from a Celeron 2 to my AXIA t-bird. When I bought my first computer I knew very little about hardware. After a Computer Hardware class I was ashamed of my cheap PCHIPS motherboard that kept on freezing anyways. Returned it and started looking on building a computer myself. To me, building a new system around that silly Celeron was not worth it.
I built this new system for CHEAP. And it's great...
With the adjustable multipler, better overclockablility, cheaper prices etc.. AMD was the way to go for me.
I gave the celeron to my parents...

In all seriousness I would think you are right.

I was over at the AMD section of this forum some days ago and I got wacked by AMD fans trying to defend me. Too many AMD fans... ..it's getting over-populated. I couldn't handle it.. ieeeeee........I shouldn't have f*ed around, hehehehe but still, it was fun arguing, trippin'.. and little bit of flamming but it was aight....
Personally, I like Intel for it's past and known quality. I have yet to see an AMD that run stable all the time at stock clocks much less at an Overclock. It would have more to do with the crap they run for chipsets though. I have yet to see an unstable out of the box Intel CPU. It's true that AMD is cheaper and faster but that's not always a good thing. With AMD chips, you are going to have to toss a bit into cooling just for stock speeds as shadow said, the run rather hot. They may have speed but aren't garunteed for crap. Niether are Intels but, it seems that the AMD forum is more of a hilarious zone of events than Intel's forum here. AMD makes nice chips but I have known Intel for excellent quality, and it will stay that way.

i have had used amd chips before, amd never really sucked, they were just behind. I remember that AMD 486 chip i had, ah the days :-). Now, AMD's quality is just as good. Intel and Amd cpus are so close in benchmarks(come on, the diferences are not that great) that it only furthers the arguments over which is better. Just go with whatever will make you happy, In all honesty, the AMD's are better values right now, especially the durons than Intels. I have a duron system i am building right now. My new computer will be Amd almost definately because I want to overclock and i have options on it i just can't get on an intel chip. On the other hand, i have a p2 233, and celeron 400, and a celey 667 and love all three of them. They are chips i have been very happy with. So I will have to put myself at neutral in this debate of all debates, as i really have no true preference of one over the other, nor do I have any loyalty to either company. The one thing I do like about this whole thing though, is how much cheaper CPUs have gotten due to the competition.
And on the server being Intel, there aren't any good AMD server boards. Where are those, there are people out there just itching to get one.

Wow! didn't expect the responses!

aaight....that's it buddy.....40 lashes with a hot DIMM!
Nubie_Doo...Ummm...is it because Skip hasn't found a good server board for the T-birds he has laying around?
nah....he keeps his AMD's for his personal "toys" and keeps stability for important stuff. Same 40 lashes for you with a SIMM this time....and you get to apologize to Skip for your mistake. =)
Dagon.....I just jumped ship a couple of months ago
nuff said.....you are banned from the Intel board unless you still own one. Truthfully....have you had a chance to play with a PIII and compare or are you just comparing to the cellie? Since you were able to build it cheap, I assume you're not doing an extreme OC nor running pelt or water systems?
Tachyon.....In all seriousness I would think you are right.
now you should be ashamed! Did your friends tell you something was cool and you followed them too? Keep your wits man! Keep the faith!

Now here's a guy that knows how to have fun! Btw....make sure you post your response to the nicknames portion of the general forum....I'm dieing to hear the reason behind this!

Another man of wisdom not suaded (sp) by the peer pressure. Love you too man.....thanks for mentioning me! =)
In all seriousness....I have to agree with him totally. AMD is fun....but not the best. Greatest speed results, but not the best for stability. If you run an AMD and an Intel chip at stock speeds...you'll get more fails from the AMD than you will the Intel. Oh and btw.....I'm going to build an AMD system soon to play around with. So don't think I'm "TOO" anti-AMD
Dunno260......So I will have to put myself at neutral in this debate of all debates
Coward.....take a stand! Make Intel proud!
aaight folks....the forum was slow and I needed something to do. It was all in fun and if I offended anyone I apologize. Like I said, I was just poking a few ribs.
Well Well Shadow, it's good to finally see someone respect me for something. But what I was simply saying is, if you are going to go with an AMD, have fun playing with the thing. I haven't seen an AMD computer without some sort of hassle involed. Whether it's chipped chips, or overheating or bad Bios versions... It's either fun or a problem. That's why I like Intel. Stick it all together and it runs perfectly (For most people). :)

I have had a mixture of systems in the past, AMD and Intel (read my sig for currents) and I have found little or no difference, the AMD's have the price and the Intel's have a little more respect - I think this is cause of the years of market domination!, but anyway i seriously don't mind either, if i were recommending a cpu at the moment I would go for a Duron. What a performer for that rock bottom price! and if you do invest in a duron look @ that upgradability!!! some of the durons are happliy kickin along with P/// let alone the cellys!
P.S I am currently building a Duron 900 system.
Although this reply sounds as if I favour AMD, well, i dont favour either but if the market keeps heading this way, everyone is going to favour AMD.

What about me?, Aod m8. I respect you too. hehe..
oh by the way.. thanks for backing me up on your part.. at the AMD section the other day. hehe.. I liked it ;D
ミルク粉ョ - I believe the beliefs of others as I do my own. I don't take personal attacks kindly towards myself, or others. I respect Intel and AMD both. Intel has always been known for quality, and as of lately, AMD is being known as a price. All I ask for is some respect on my opinions from others and I will do the same. I won't attack anyone, I won't retalliate but I will stand behind my beliefs and others if the time comes to do so. Just giving that I think I should to help the people. :)

i am a coward for not taking a stand. Ok well i guess i will take a stand.
Right now AMD has the advantage over Intel. I have seen no reason or evidence for Intel to be more stable. Intel just has a monopoly on the server market and on the OEM market as they are able to compete with AMD with supply. AMD can't even begin to imagine producing as many chips as Intel. But AMD gives you more for a lower price. And so what if I have to buy a larger HSF to cool my Duron or T-Bird, i still have a huge chunk of change using a T-Bird. And the mobos are not far off in price at all.
But of course, ultimately the competition benefits everyone(except Intel, but they will be around for a long long time anyways, probably longer than AMD). So lets all throw a party for competition.

LOL....no Shadow. What I meant is that at this time I wouldn't build a server based on AMD and VIA. I know people that do (and sell them to businesses) because they can apparently build a sub-$1000 "server".
