View Full Version : If you're familiar with Compaq hs....not hsf.....

here's something I tinkered with last night.
I had 2 processors laying around.....one was a P II 300 Retail.....the other a P II 300 Compaq. Retail is normal with a hsf but Compaq is famous for putting HUGE heat sinks on their processors w/o any type of fan.
Anyway...the fan on the retail chip is going bad....all kinds of "bad berrings" noises. Still runs about 4000 rpm....but you know it's going sooner or later. So...just outta curiousity I took the fan off and noticed the thermal grease was all dried up and cracked. Cleaned it off and put some "quality" radio shack stuff on and put it back in.....results were about 3 degrees f cooler.
Then I did the same with the Compaq chip. Didn't test before I put the goop on but stuck it in......results w/o fan were 2 degrees cooler than the retail one. Soooooo.....I stuck an 80 mm fan (just proped there) on my vid card pointing at my hs. results....15 degrees cooler! It's now running at 79 f while running Folding.....all the time.
I hate Compaq.....I really do....but gotta give credit where credit is due. Their heat sinks are impressive with a little work.
oh and it's on a modern board (QDI).....just RMA'ing the chip and using this as a stand in for now.
Hey, whatever works though right? I woulnd't mind having that P2 300 though... heheh I could OC the **** out of it for fun and watch it burn at like 126mhz FSB... One game of NFS 5 lol! Probably not, it would probably end up as a system bent on folding or seti, or... BOTH! :)
Being broke sucks... heh
Good idea though, that shows that your are quite handy with your ideas. Tape the fan to the heatsink, maybe use duct tape and set up some tup of exuast fan system for it as in a directed in/out airflow? :)

Well my mother's P III 500 just went poof....so I had the 300's laying around and while waiting for the RMA I figured I'd get her back to running.
Tried to oc it a bit and can't get to above 338 because it won't even post. I'll tinker a bit more.....but this is kinda fun stuff....
at least I have 2 of them in case I burn one up.
Mine is a 933 usually clocked to 1022 for kicks.....I'm not the broke one....my mother is! hehe
Good to hear you got the fan situation remedied, Shadow. When I got the 1st Celeron 600 of mine, not more than five minutes after firing it up the fan in the Gorb went south on it. (I bought the cpu/slocket/Gorb together, pre-tested and assembled).
Fortunately, being that I had literally just installed it, I had the case side off, and looked down as I was booting ( I had shut down the power, moved vcore jumpers on the slocket and then bumped the FSB in the BIOS) and SAW the fan not spinning!! YIKES!! Luckily, I was able to hit the kill switch faster than immediately....
I had to put the old Celeron 300A back in until I could replace the Gorb (I got it replaced free, from the guy I bought it thru e-BAY from, but had to wait for shipping from Mass. to Tenn. and back) I took me a week to find a Gorb locally.
That's the only reason I still have the 300A.... now that I've got a 1 GHz + Celeron backing up the P///.....I think it's time to pass along the 300A.
It sure is nice to have a backup cpu when things go bad, isn't it?!
This is also one of the reasons I'm not a big advocate of the Gorb anymore....

Hehe, if I had half the money i needed I would start investing in a 700e to overclock, this old katmai has hit it's mark.. :)

My backup P2-233 acts as a motivator for me to get things fixed as SOON as possible! I have become addicted to fast comps. Even the P3-733 at the office seems slow after nearing the 1gig barrier with my Celly2.

very cool shadow, just goes to prove that heatsinks work better with more surface area. Gee, why do people keep getting those gorbs. They seem to cause so many problems and must be awful coolers with such a low surface area.

okay, well this is gonna sound strange, but i have an odd question....
my cel400 was in a static bag, and the bag has a rip (horizontaly) about 2-3 inches long.
the rip was about 1 inch above the top of my celly (no this isn't my math homework =p)
the bag slid off the top of my TV and got stuck to the screen.
in about 1 sec, i pulled it off.
no, i'm not sure if the rip was towards or away from the TV, but if it was towards, what is the chances of static jumping in the bag?? i've stuck my hand in the bag and tried, putting my fingers where the chip was, and havent gotten shocks, but skin can resist electriciy.... BTW, gorbs run nice on P2 cores (10c+ drop in temp on my celly over retail) alot of my life is riding on this chip being alive, con someone give me a % of life for this chip or am i $hit outta luck??
i've already bought the slotket, but i dont have ne1 that'll test my celly for free (like a firend) with a slot1 mobo.....
so, will i get lucky, or get fudged out here?

I'd guess it's still ok. The screen grabbed the bag, not the processor. If it's not OEM it wouldn't matter as warranty would probably cover this. (not sure) but this is also why I preach buying Retail. Price is minimal but the warranty is MUCH better.

Newbie, check this scenario out ...I dieal with "MHz shock" every day.
I've got the P/// running here (at home) at 954 MHz. When I go to work, I on occaision have to use the PC at work to look up car info (I'm a mechanic, we have the AllData cd-rom service manuals) or write up bills for customers.
My boss is still using a '94 vintage HP...running a P75, 20 MB ram (YES 20 as in twenty!!) with the "cavernous" hdd of 1GB. Win95a......
Mother of God that thing is pathetically slow!
I keep begging him to let me throw a P233MMX in it. Jeez, it's not like we'll void the warranty!
BTW...our Hunter alignment machine's computer is a 486/33 running Win3.11
DOH!!!

Ive got an older compaq's HS hacked up and am using it on my radeon as ram sinks. Theyre actually bigger than the radeon HS. They do a good job, no complaints.
Heck, I have a very large Avvid heatsink on my P3 right now. I built three fans onto it and boy, she runs rather cool, usually at room temp. It will hit 40C on occasion but these Katmai's were/are known for running very hot so. From what I have read about them they can tolerate 60C+ without problems though I haven't hit that temp yet :)

well if you've ever seen a Compaq MONSTER hs, this is it. Pins (or whatever they're called) are almost 2 inches high and the surface area is the entire size of the PII. Monster sink! hehe

Boy you sure are right...I was upgrading a compaq for a freind, and when I opened the box, I started busting out laughing...and he (my freind) couldn't figure out why...the cpu..K6-2 333 had a monster h.s. and no fan...just a cardboard shroud comming from the power sup, and blowing...well just breasing actualy over the h.s...this h.s looked like an early P4 h.s. without the fan of course...and I was surprised to find that they didn't add any holes in the p.s. unit for extra cooling...to be honest, compaq is the only company I know of to actualy implement the ATX specification...meaning that they moved the cpu towards the power sup, for more ventilation, and left it there.
From now on, when somebody tells me they just bought a compaq...I usualy respond with "Oh I'm sorry"
or "my condolences"
