View Full Version : Why does everyone BOO-Out the Celeron II 700?

Everyone always says that the Celeron II 700 is such a horrible chip, and never wants to overclock. I got mine to 966 @ 2.1v stable. I am sure that if i get a aplha/hog i could get it to 987+ @ 2.1v. I even saw poeple getting theirs to 1050. No more tho.

You know the answer Carmine- MOST people are too sensible to run a chip at the design maximum voltage, especially when there are other chips that will run as fast or faster without the headaches.

With that high of multiplier, folks that won't or can't run high Vcore will be stuck with lousy performance at 80 odd FSB or thereabouts. Most configurations don't support Vcore increases beyond about 20%.

Carmine,

Yeah, but I got my C600 to 1053 at a lower vcore. Why? Because the multi on the C700 is too darn high!

I got a P/// 600E, like a whole bunch of people were suggesting here....it's running at 954 MHz, at 1.95v.

And it kicks the c600/1053's @$$, because of the higher FSB (159 to 117), and the better L2 cache.

Yeah, you got the C700 to overclock....but look at all of the headaches you've had along the way. Both of my 600's (Celeron and P///) were effortless overclocks.

If you really want to run a 700 chip, get a P/// FC-PGA......that's my next chip.

Do you ever feel that a dead horse is being flogged here? Will this subject ever be left to lie?

Lets set some rules down :-

The Celeron 700 allows dire memory bandwidth when overclocked or not.
The Celeron 600 allows great memory bandwidth when overclocked.

The voltage you use is just asking for trouble.
The voltage I use is just asking for a good overclock.

Your memory runs 97Mhz
My memory runs 145Mhz

Your vidoe card can only run AGP 2x
My Video Card can run AGP 4x

Dependant on the PCI divider you are using you probably have slightly underspecified or grossly overspecified PCI bus speeds (why has your Radeon crapped out?)
My PCI bus is just nice and well below 40Mhz

These are the benfits that you get from buying correct chips, and thinking about what you are doing. Your PC is on a suicide mission, I would never buy a second hand component from you.

The single most reason is the high multiplier..10x
so your bus options are limited...
I'm still confused why people are using celerons at all.
The only celeron I will ever own is my trusty 300a, and it's benefits have been evaluated at nauseum, I feel that cache is more important than speed, and if you can get cache AND speed, then you're ahead of the game...you wanna see how important cache is? just turn off your cache, and boot up, and see if you can get a cup of coffee, goto the head, maybe comb your hair, and maybe it will be finished booting by then, but don't hold your breath.
I flashed my BE6 one day, and the instructions said to turn off the cache, and boot up...well it took longer than ten minutes just to get to the loading win screen.
For my money, I will stick with a PIII

For my Celeron II 700, i have the pci divider to 1/3 so @ 92, it is around 30. The crapping out of my Radeon had nothing to do with my setup, i put it back in after messing around with a VooDoo3 i just got and got lines for no reason. By the way, Ati is going to send me a new one.

After messing around with my P3 450 and comparing it to my Celeron II 700, i almost peed myself. I left them both @ default, with a voodoo3, and ran 3Dmark2001. the p3 was about 50 3dmarks better! But when i overclocked them both, i put the Celeron II 700 @ 966 and the p3 to 545, and the Celeron won by 100 3dmarks. Considering i didn't overclock them evenly, CELERON'S SUCK!!!

I know exactly what i am upgrading next. I am getting rid of this piece of crap Celeron, and never going to buy one again, unless i am desperate, or just want to screw around! The next chip i will buy will either be a 600e like Mr. B has, or a 700e. I think the 700e wll do nicely. But for my birthday (4 days) i am getting a Duron 600/Epox 8kta3 combo and seeing what that can do. I know exactly why Celeron II 700's suck, THEY ARE CRAP.

Thanx alot for the replies, just trying to push the crap out of my chip, but when my chip IS crap it isn't going to happen.

Well, my cousin (God rest his soul) used to use a quote that fits here perfectly. He was a HUGE Chevy boy from ways back, and loved his original, real deal '69 Camaro Z/28 more than anything. He usually used this line in conjunction with describing a Ford.....

"You can't polish a turd."

I kinda think it describes this C700, pretty well......
