Hey, yeah it's me again. One of my friends said I had good components and only my CPU was slowing me down... So, my last upgrade question before I order. I was looking at the celeron tests, I guess I never really paid any attention to it, but a 900 celeron almost gets out done and sometimes it does by a 650e?! I want to upgrade for the last time and be good for a year or two or til I see some new stuff.

So here it is, stay with Slot one or go to FCPGA?

I seen a PIII 600E slot one, can get a vantec double fan and heatsink ( not the greatest, for about 150 bucks- hoping that my it will reach 800, maxing out my Abit BH-6.

Or do I go with a PIII 700 cco pretested to 1050- for about 250 bucks with fcpga and a 6800 rpm fan? But I can only reach 933 due to my abit.

I know my abit BH6 is getting a little ancient, been think about going with that ASUS Cusl2-c ( think thats the right one) with all the bus speed options and what notand then get the full 1050 out of a PIII but then Im stuck with 350 bucks or so and id like to spend about 250? ;)

P.S. ( I want >150 FPS on QIII Arena on Fastest Timedemo 1)
Thanks all

ABIT Bh-6
Geforce2 GTS 240/390
SCSI 8.4 gig 10k rpm
256 meg pc 133
PIII 450 @ 504/558 when I feel like stalling after a few hrs ;)

I guess it all depends on how much money you want to spend. I personally never bought or never will buy a pretested cpu. Only due to the cost difference. I have always bought OEM (mainly cause of the trouble of taking the stock HSF off the retail chips). I may get flamed for that but oh well.
IMHO you should get the 700 flip chip with a slotket. That way you are ready when you do get a new board and your not limited to buying only a slot 1 board.

Go ahead and get the pretested cpu for $250.00 if you dont mind spending the extra money. Then atleast it's garunteed! Or you could go to Price watch.com and find the same chip without the Heat sink and fan for around $125.00. Me I'm a bit of a cheap skate. Or a little braver I guess. I like to take my chances!

what graphics setting you want to run the Quakey3 timedemo1 at? 1024x768x16bit color with eye candy stuff On at 150 fps? if so, you'd definitely need a P3 700 then OC.

well, first off, there is no celey 900, will just assume you are talking about the 800. The PIII is definately a lot faster than the celey, unlike the PII and the celey. Get a regular pIII 700E for cheaper, a good hsf, and a new mobo, and you should not be too far over that one that is guaranteed over a gig, and you will probably be able to get close to that, if not a little farther. Plus, you will get all of that, for not a whole lot more than the guarenteed one! Definately the best solution. And now you will have an extra mobo for a secondary system. What could be better? :)

If you are going to spend 250 on a p3 700 pretested to 1050, and 150 on a CUSL-2 then how bout go amd?

Check this out.....
1 ghz (266) AXIA will goto 1400+ air cooled-----------150
1.33ghz (266) AXIA will goto 1500+air cooled--------220
Epox 8kta3--------------------------------------------------------120
Iwill KK266---------------------------------------------------------125 (really good motherboard)

A 1.33ghz AXIA @ 1500+ and a Iwill KK266 is my dream system....happening shortly.

carmine is right, you can get an amd cheaper and faster, but if you want intel, get something that is not pretested and get a new mobo too. For around 320, i got my bro a new motherboard, 700mhz duron, fop 38 hsf, and 256 mb of ram to upgrade his system. That is not too much more than that 250. Granted, the PIII is faster, but you get the idea, get a cpu that is not "pretested" and save tons of money. You are likely to get similar results with your cpu, especially an intel one.
