My grandpa just found in his closet a 486dx2 laptop. I got it out, and oc'd the 33mhz chip to 40mhz, and loaded a ram cartridge I had laying around. The problem is, now that I've reinstalled windows 3.1 I cant get it to display more than 16colors on screen, when the adapter in it supports up to 16bit color. I dont get it! The laptop os a Satellite T1950CT. Could I have some help? The only reason I case so much is because the ocforums wallpaper looks pretty cruddy at 16colors.

Nevermind, I got it. Looks great! Now if only I could figure out how to get it online....

Lol, thought you would understand. If I see something non-functional or semifunctional, naturaly, I fix it.

Also, I downloaded a realy cool skin for it called calmira. It takes up a bit over 4k of ram, and makes it look just like win95. I plan on getting a nic card for it too, a used one, so I can browse the web on it.

Why? Because I can.

You could always dump a small install of linux on that old laptop. Somewhere in my pile of junk i've got an old pentium 60 with a linux distro on it. Works on the net and everything.

Yuri, why don't you just install windows95 on it? 3.1 just seems so sinister and old and scary! :p

God I shutter at the thought of 3.1. There wasn't even a taskbar back then.

You guys are funny - lmao. Ya mean you shudder at the thought of making config changes w/ an editor? Don't be askeered, it's just DOS w/ some pretty pictures on top :D

And on a positive note there's no registry - you delete a prog & that sucker is gone.
My first looked a little something like this....
Ah....do'in the floppy shuffle. Upgrade to a 10mb HHD (full height naturally) & you rule the world. This machine should work great, I mean nobody WILL EVER NEED MORE THAN 640K RAM, right?

Somebody slap him for even mentioning a Trash-80 :D

If you want I think I could dig up my 3.1 for system engineers - from no less than "Microsoft University", it's about 100 pages I think :D

My first experiences on a computer were on an old Amiga while sitting on my dad's lap. I was just a few years older than it was!

If you want to take things WAAAAAY out of context, then yes, it was. He never meant that PC's would only need 640KB of RAM, he meant that it would be plenty for the original IBM PC.

For about 6 months (around 1997), our family computer WAS a 486/40 laptop that we got from a relative that was running... WIN95!! It even came with a PCMCIA soundcard/SCSI card (which I still have somewhere) and a 28.8 modem that would always connect at "57000 bps". It did the internet, some games, and a little word processing here and there, all very slowly. I remember trying to watch Flash movies on it in ultra-slow motion and sound out of sync by a few seconds. I really don't know why we didn't just mooch the install disk off of them and put Win95 on our other (better) 486/55 desktop. I also have a Microsoft sampler disk from about 1996 that the same realitives got my mail (it even includes a free utility to check weather Windows 95 would work on your computer).

With a voltage mod and some water you could prolly get that sucker up to 45MHz.

Lets play GUESS THAT OS!! Obviously Lappy1 and Lappy2 are the laptop pics.

Sorry ive been away so long, been busy w/other things. Anyway, ill call whoever guesses that OS a stuperluge. The lappy is ~12"/8" and weighs next to nothing. It can run a max of 640/480@256 colors. 40mhz with 8mb of ram, 4mb onboard and 4mb via a memory card, which was designed for this laptop.
