I have an abit sh6 (intel 815e) mobo which takes slot1 cpu's. I'm gunna be buying a 1000mhz p3 soon and I have a choice of either the slot 1 version or a socket 370 using one of those adapter boards.
Which would you people say is better for overclocking ?
I'm presuming the 370 is best 'cos it's more popular and so I'm more likely to get a later chip which should be better, or something...
please help, thanks
Well, I myself like the Slot configuration for the ability to mount a fan on the rear of the CPU's little board. S370 is a good choice though, it all depends on what you want but I would got with the slot. But that's just my opinion. :)

Will Maltby,
Both the Slot1 and Socket 370 system have similar overclockablitiy and performance. It just depends on the quality and method of cooling setup is where you can get a little more edge..
Your Abit SH6 is a very good mobo. That is designed for some severe overclock and stability. Since you already have SH6, getting a Slot1 would be good.. I hear many times from us overclocking folks who have experience with FCPGA with a Slocket and install it on a Slot 1 mobo. People say that.. you will have more option on the higher Vcore voltage setting that can be adjusted on the Slocket. I do not own Slocket but I did build some of the Slocket included systems at work. For more detail on this, there are others who know more about it. Mr. B knows well on this and some other folks too.
Immediate choice #1: Go with a Slot 1 chip for your Abit SH6 mobo.
if not, hang around here a little more to get some clarification on the FCPGA and Slocket issue from us folks here.

Ummm, i got a S370 p3 1ghz and it overclocks decently, sine you already have a slot1 mobo you can buy either, i would recommend a s370 and a SlotKEY card to run your s370 on your slot1 mobo, simply because you can get an alpha pep66t cooler for maximum cooling.

Since you are asking for advice...
I'd buy the 370 FCPGA processor with an MSI 6905 Master Version II Slocket. This would give you the ability to move that 1 Gig proc to ANY board you want down the road. Stay with the Slot 1 processor and you are stuck with the slot 1 mobo. IMHO I don't think we are going to see new chipsets in slot 1. Abit was gracious with the SH6. What happened to all the other companies (Asus, Gigabyte, Soyo, etc)? Thats right, they only built the 815 chipset on the 370 setup!

yeah, I think you guys have convinced me to get the 370. It's 40 quid cheaper too over here in the UK.
thanks for the info everyone
