My friend is looking to upgrade his Gforce 2. He has a 1.6 P4 and not sure about the rest. It is a Compaq so I'm going to ask him about his mobo and such and make sure he can get a good video card. I'm guessing he may not and I may offer to build him a pretty budget system.

I am thinking this is a Willimette P4 right?....

God help us all... get a G4 4200Ti... don't bother with anything else...

TI4200 baby! You can get a nice refurbed one from Newegg. I got one last week for my brother. This is the best card for under 100 without a doubt.

Does he have an AGP slot?

Well, I gotta see about the AGP slot. I really want to just build him a computer but not sure if he would have enough money for a whole new one. He is pretty much a computer n00b. Then again, I am pretty much one too. But I did build 4 machines and got Linux running properly on one of them so I guess I'm not that bad. ;)

He does understand basic things like the parts of the computer and such. I do hope he has an AGP slot.

For $50, u can get a Radeon 8500le which is a great/stable card

Or if you could pay 10$ more this (http://store.yahoo.com/hoct12/atirad8500le.html) looks like a pretty good deal to me, although i could be wrong; and i dont know how reliable that place is.

best card under 100 would probably be a ti 4200. unless you can find a refurb 9600 pro for around the that.

Ti4200 is too good for a Willimette P4 1.6.

Another vote for the refurb/used 4200 or 9600. Either are still extremely high performing cards.

and they OC easily too, correct? :-)

Usually they overclock well. I also vote for the 4200/9600.

How does a Ti4200 work with AGP 8x and DirectX 9?

AGP 8x doesn't do much of anything for real world performance, I wish people would understand that.

In Directx9, the 4200 doesn't fare as well as its a DX8.1 card. It still blows away the 5200 and beats the 5600 sometimes.

go with the TI4200. Some people may say that the 9600pro is more compatible with DX9. But by the time true DX9 games are released, 9600 pro probably can't run them at a decent resolution anyways.

The 1.6ghz CPU won't help things either

I think a Ti4200 for new ones or a refurb 4200/ati 9600 are good.

I recently picked up a newegg refurb ti4200 (128mb) version for $70, and I have seen 9600 pro for $100 at the refurb section too.
