got my artifact problem solved with my 9800 pro by removing the shim with some dental floss and a razor blade then very carefully replaced the water block with some springs on the fixings so as not to crush the core:)

so for people wanting put a waterblock on a ATI 9800 pro you may have to remove the shim but be very careful not to crush the core.

Also shim removal is tricky best solution i found was dental floss to start it off then very carefully with a razor blade

new speeds are in my sig an improvement from getting artifacts under stock speed:D

Good job. If I push it I can get around those clocks.

Did you have to remove the shim, couldn't you have left it on? It is the same height as the core in my 9800 XT and I am contemplating removing it also, but if posible I'll leave it alone and simply place the water block over it all.

I didn't remove the shim for my watercooling, but I can only get up to 423 on the core without artifacts, too. Using a swiftech mcw-50, but I think I put a bit too much thermal paste on the core, too. Problem with the radeon is that there are only 2 mounting holes instead of 4 which makes it harder to get really good contact. I might try the shim removal and see if that helps any.
