I just built a computer for a friend and for some odd reason the machine goes really slow. We finally made it into WinXP but the CPU usage is 50% even when were not doing anything. The system specs:

Pentium 4 2.4
Corsair 512 DDR333
Radeon 9800 XT
Intel D865PERL motherboard (hyper thread enabled)

No i dont have that installed, this system is straight off a WinXP install with nothing installed except WinXP.

It goes extremely slow, struggles to get into Windows, and when it does the CPU usage is 50% and no lower.

It also wont even go into WinXP without the WinXP cd being in the drive, and XP has already been fully installed. It will just reboot on the startup splash screen.

Something is really wrong. I think that since you have HT enabled something with XP is eating all your CPU which is half for one thread.. I would try reinstalling XP if I were in your shoes. Try that and we'll go from there.

I actually had a friend come over and we looked this over and went through the manual and the one thing that really confused us was the RAM. It told us to place the ram in Slot A 0 but it wouldnt work in that slot, So we installed in Slot B 0 and it started working, so far the system has ran for about an hour(im installing alot of drivers/software) but it seems to be running fine, and its not using 50% of the processor no matter what im doing.
So im not sure if it was the ram messing with the CPU usage or a faulty WINXP install.
