View Full Version : Anyone having issues trying to install/uninstall drivers?

Why can't it just be easy?

Ok I've had the 53.03 drivers since they've come out and they're OK I guess but I want to play an older game right now which would work better on a driver version such as 30.82 or 29.42. So, I uninstall the newer drivers like normal, restart, and now all of a sudden these 52.16 drivers are automatically installed by Windows. Ok, no big deal, I'll turn on my reg tweak that disables the auto-install of drivers (which I used to install video card drivers before) and then install. Do that, but it doesn't work - they're still automatically installed. Ok, whatever, I'll just install the 30.82's over the ones that are being automatically installed. Reboot, says that the 30.82's are installed, but in device manager and clearly from the performance, there's an "issue". No matter what I try, I'm unable to get my drivers working (although if I wanted to I could easily just go back to 53.03).

Any ideas? I know that Windows used to install 29.58's automatically, but now it's 52.16... *sigh*

Also, using safe mode doesn't seem to change things at all either.

I wonder if it's just that the detonator and forceware drivers just don't play nice together when one or the other has been installed... wish I could just whipe them both out :\

The message under device status when I install 30.82 or anything like it: This device cannot start. (Code 10) (that's what the "issue" is)

That means to uninstall and reinstall if i remember correctly.
As far as my problem,i reformatted!Bliss! Check the help option it explains it exactly.

Yeah that always works, but I'd rather not have to have it come to that :\

Ok, whenever I reboot it automatically adds this to my add/remove programs - "NVidia Display Driver". This is in addition to the XP/2000 one that I have when I install my own drivers. Maybe that's causing some problems?

maybe you need to delete that driver cache folder in windows. I dunno how far it keeps old drivers, but couldn't hurt to clear it out..

C:\WINDOWS\Driver Cache\i386

also perhaps it's taking the drivers from your windows system restore backups. Try deleting all but the latest one by going to disk cleanup and clicking "more options"

dunno if either of those will solve the problem but you never know..

I don't have any system restore backups.

I'll try that next time I have a problem, but somehow I was able to get 45.23 to install and work correctly so I'll see how well this works.

Have you tried RIP?

There are a few more detenator driver removers, try them all. I believe I had that problem, till I started using those utilities.

Here's a link, and there are also more good stuff there for download..

Yeah I downloaded all of them... DD doesn't work for XP, and I tried NFR - worked "OK" I guess, but didn't fix my problem. I'll install RIP next time.

This is really weird.
I have a cable modem and i tried to update driver and use the manual way to find and install it right?
Now i just reformatted so the only drivers it could have in the cache would have to be at least 2 years old right?
so i update to the 4403's i wanted to install and guess what?
after its done the new drivers are 5216's!!!!
so i think somehow the pc downloaded the 5216's from windows update and installed them cause they were newer than the 4403's!
Now after reformatting to fix my problem im back to square 1!

Yeah I believe it has something to do with windows update... I think one of the updates probably makes it so 52.16's or greater are installed automatically...

Don't ask me how I got my 45.23's to stay though :\

1rst make sure ur not connected to the internet!

Then just goto add/remove,remove the nvidia display driver and reboot.

Now when the found new hard ware wizard comes up,it should not auto install any drivers so u cancel the wizard and in the end it will say "there was a problem with your installation your hardware might not work"right?Good!

Now u can double click on the new drivers to install them!
If it tells u during installation that the file exists already, overwrite all the files that already exist even if u have to keep pressing enter like 15 times to finish the installation.

reboot again when its done and ur all set!

also detonator destroyer does work on xp,but u have to right click on the program before u install and goto properties then run it in win 95 or 98 mode. Then go back and install it. whew!

Damn, thought I was the only one with this problem.

After I installed the 53.03s I heard they crushed performance but they ran fine on my gf2mx400. When I upgraded to a ti4600 though it was time for them to go. (ti with 53.05 and punkbuster cause hard crashes in games) I couldn't get them to come off though. Would uninstall, but when I went to put the 45.33 driver on it just went back to the 53.03 again. Even using the third party destroyer programs didn't work, I'm on 2K though so not all of them work with it.

Like you, the only older driver I could get to 'stick' was the 45.23 which I just left on there since it isn't causing any problems.

I don't know WTF the deal is, I was under the impression that uninstall meant UNINSTALL.

Oh well, I'm ok now.

Ok I'll give that a try, I've about had it with doing searches in my C:\ for NVidia files and also my registry...

So far it's not working, but I'll keep on trying... BTW what driver version worked for you?

Gregory_WE
02-05-04, 04:55 PM
Yep, still no go... at least I can now cancel the automatic install, but still, when I reboot after running the .exe I get the error in device manager that my video card could not start. Also, when it has that error, there is no monitor anywhere to be seen, even when I try to have it search for PnP compliant devices.

Also, maybe the driver installation is messed up, because it almost instantly goes to 100%, when it would seem like it should take longer than that.

Reinstalling 53.03's always work :\

Were you ever having a problem with getting the error that your card couldn't start? (code 10)
