View Full Version : Thinking of going Peltier...

I've got a Thermalright SK-7 (Tt SmartCase fan modded) w/Barton 2500 (Gigabyte 7N400 pro). I've been looking into adding a peltier to my cooler and I was wondering if it would be advantageous. If so, what wattage should I go with? and will my power supply handle it (Fortron Source 350W, single WD 80G HD, 5 case fans, 2 optical drives, floppy, GeForce 4 vid, TV Tuner)? Any suggestions & opinions are welcome, but I'd rather not go with water cooling right now. Thanks

Thermaltake has the subzero 4G for about $100 it comes with the power supply already but is not at all an extreme cooler just good enough to reach 2445mhz on a barton 2500.
That is what I'm running right now, I got it cause it was cheap and promise to be less noisy than a regular fan. But when you run over 1.775volts it gets just as noisy since it runs all the time at full speed.
I realize know that it would have been much better to wait to save more and get a watercooled system from swiftech or whatever

To be effective, you're going to need to be able to bolt the coldplate to the heatsink (with the peltier in the middle) independantly of the mobo retension mechanism, because you're going to want to clamp that peltier in there real good without putting so much pressure on your core.

The more powerful the peltier, the better temps you're going to have, so I'd reccomend a 226watt one. The best price I found was at www.frozencpu.com for $35. With any TEC that's going to be good enough to put on your cpu, don't count on your psu to be able to handle the load. You're going to need to either buy a new ps, or build your own.

Also, for something like a 226w pelt, don't expect to keep your system from overheating without watercooling and an EXTREMELY large radiator. Be sure to insulate the socket, etc. as well.

Yeah, thats something I forgot to mention - to realize the benefits of peltier cooling, you're going to need to watercool.

dont even think about trying a 226watt pelt with a heatsink.

.25C rise/ per watt

360watt of heat for the pelt + 100 on the processor = 460watts * 0.25C

 112C over ambient.

pluging that into the power supply thats powering the rest of your system would have equal results
