View Full Version : Dammit, does no one know how to OC here?
Got yer attention now?
Please, I need help, no one will msg me, or tell me anything about my Xeon processor. I have a brand new Xeon 550 Mhz, with either a 1mb (I think more 1mb) or a 512kb cache. CAN I OC IT!!!!!?
No one has said, yes/no, I found a site where a guy said he fot a 450 Xeon PIII 512 cache upto 625!!! can I do it with mine? I dunno, no one will tell me anything :( now, enough self pitty, but can someone please either tell me a Xeon OC site, or hook me up with someone that runs Xeon. (I'm on a E-5250 Gateway work Stn. and I want this puppy to dog it a lil faster, I want to be able to run multiple heavey 3d programs (Maya, PS, LW etc) without alot of lag, so I got a Xeon, now I wanna OC it.)
PLEASE HELP ME!!!!
(By the way, where can I go for Xeon cooling stuff?)

As almost no one has this chip very little know about O/cing it.

Being a newby to OCing I don't know if what I can offer will help much,but...
I cant see the cache size making much difference to OCing, and as far as my very limited knowlege of Xeon's goes I believe there just based on a normal P3 with more cache.
Obviously because these are not very common chips you may find that people are reluctant to comment on stuff they have never tried.
but if you were to list you whole complete system details in as much detail as you can find out, you may find that people are a little more responsive and prepared to have a guess.
I personally cant see why you wouldn't be able to use conventional OCing methods on this setup, but as I said I know very little about OCing, so I would suggest proceed with extreme caution.

what type of MB are you running, I'm not even sure if the slot2 MB's have an open Bios like the Slot1, a, flip-chips. But add as much info about your system. THat always helps...
I don't know, but I do recall reading somewhere that the Gateways that had the Xeon processors weren't overclockable. I'm not sure but it just might be that way.

Intel were going through that phase were they didn't like people mucking around with the settings, it may be possible that both the multiplier and FSB are both locked on the CPU as AoD suggested, I can't be sure because it was a while ago, but now its been mentioned I vaugely remember someone mentioning this, but again I wouldn't take it as gospel.

I am not sure but I believe this chip can be overclocked but it is severly limited by the large amount of cache on the chips.
Well, here, I'll post as much as I can:
Intel PIII 550 Mhz Xeon
512k Cache (what it spits at me on startup, sorry for sayin 1 MB cache :( )
256 MB ECC SDRAM Certified
15 GB Maxtor 7200 RPM HD
8 GB Fujitsu 5400 RPM BU HD
Altera chipset
Gateway E-5250 Full tower case
3 COM Etherlink B905E Network Card
120 MM ducted case fan
300W power supply
Pheonix BIOS 6.01
Asus 50X CD ROM
Aopen 12x10x32 CDRW
Windows 2000
ATI Rage Fury Pro 2X AGP DUal Display Graphics Card
SoundBlaster Platinum 5.1
Altec Lansing 5.1 Speakers
3 Com Home Connect ADSL Modem
And I think thats it.
I would try to apply conventional OC methods, but for the fact that I dont have my mobo manual n e more, and cant find out WTF it is :( doesn't say anywhere at all!!!! Gateway Tech Support was completely useless in this regard also (For all you potential computer buyers hahaha, word spreads fast hey) Umm, half of my problem is finging any info at all, what so ever about heatsinks and fans for this hoe. NO WHERE, I repeat, NO WHERE/ANYBODY has been able to tell me anything in regards to this :(
Umm, what else, I dont believe my FSB etc is locked because I got this computer new this year (Like 3 weeks ago) and so the likely hood of it being locked is low from what I've read on the net so far.
Ummm, what else. N E Thing else?
Can you find any serial numbers or any kind of code you could do a search with?
If so try chase down m/b info from that.
Try Sisoft sandra. It should give you the motherboard mfg and model or look at the motherboard for the same.
Try www.coolerguys.com for xeon cooling.
