View Full Version : Thermal Paste
Will a cpu run good without thermal paste not o/c. Its because I just ordered a cpu and I have stock hsf and I was gonna use the cpu until I get better cooling then apply the thermal paste.

NO!!!!!!!!!! Don't due that.....having no thermal paste will send your temps sky rocketting as heat is not transfered well from ceramic to metal. You could kill your chip really quickly.

Also it depends on your processor. What do you have. 1.2 TBird will fry pretty damn quick but a p2 or old celly might survive.

DON'T do that. Get some of the cheap goop at trhe shack at least. You really really need it. You will fry your cpu that way, especially if it is an athlon, duron, or higher clock p3.

--> He said not overclocked. And I'm sure that he has P3 chips, not AMD. There's no way his P3 chips gonna be "fried" or killed without thermal paste, that is way off Door Knob. Yes... you're right about the T-birds and Durons are famous for overheating but still will not fry just like that without thermal paste.
I have done a couple of P3 cartridges@ not overclocked without HSF and was able to boot into windows a couple of times no problem and survived no problem... Put back the HSF and they ran just fine ever since. But, guys... don't try this at home with T-birds and Durons because not only they'll get fried but they will get exploded and you might get dead from the blast.

ƒ~ƒ‹ƒN•²® is right, i have a p3 1ghz oc'ed and not, i had the stock thermal tape that came with it, but everytime i take of the heatsink it scrapes off, rigth now there is NO tape and the cpu is running at 40c-45c used to run at 30c, the thing about p3 1ghz is that they run VERY cool, i took off the hsf when i was running the q3 demo001 loop for 3 hours, the cpu didn't budge over 50c. Will a cpu run without thermal paste not o/c? if it's intel then yes, but i still highly recommend you buy thermal compund from radio shack or get some arctic silver II. Happy Overclocking

Umm.. you mean without "HSF" to run Quake3 demo for 3hrs?? I hope you meant "without F" right? =0

It can be done, with the following exceptions stated above but why not make a stop off at the shack and get a 6.5G tube for 4$? It lasts a few apps and is decent compound for the price.
My question is: Why would you even take the chance??? Even the cheapest thermal paste you can find has to be much better than nothing.

oh in my situation, i been using cpu thermal paste for my current setup. Once I will succeed in getting my modified aluminum HS off of my AGP northbridge chipset - because it's been blocking the room for fitting a bigger HSF on the slot1 cpu cartridge- , I'll get Alpha Pep66T topped with Artic Silver II thermal compound for the cpu and I should be able to bump it up little more. right now, with my custom home-coolin setup is doing its job but I do need some better cooling.
