Hi everyone,
This is my first post, so excuse me for any ignorance I may have. I currently have a PIII 450mhz on a soyo mobo (sy-6vca) w/128 RAM, 2 HDs, GeForce2 mx, and a lot of fans inside. I am trying to get my fps up in Tribes 2 but I'm wary about how much I can overclock this thing before it goes boom. Right now my system temp is: 32 C and my cpu is: 36 C, is this a high temp? If not what is? and what is a reasonable temp if I were to OC?

32oC is a pretty good system temp, I like to keep mine at 30 (usually only about 28oC) or under but this is with a fair few case fans, with out any case fans my system temp is usually about 38oC, 36oC for your chip, is this when the chip is idle (not running anything cpu intensive) or at full load (during a game etc..) as if it is full load then this is good considering you probabally have stock cooling and with that core, if it is idle then it pretty average, your system temp is ok as long as you keep it under 40oC, preferably around 30oC, your chip will be ok up to about 50oC but a that temp it won't be too stable, around 45oC will be ok, I doubt it is going to go boom just from overclocking, just keep uppinf the bus speed until it stops being stable or won'r post, it's possible you might get to a 133mhz fsb for 600mhz but this will require god cpu cooling, a 124mhz fsb can cause havoc with pci devices, especially the harddrive, usually it will just fail to boot into windows but sometimes it will get into windows them scramble the registery or file system so be careful, a 110-115mhz is usually the best option and should be stable, you may need a bios update for a 133mhz fsb so check the manufacturers website

To get these temps I run GLExcess, a 3D demo, at above 1024X768 resolution, 32bit color. I let it loop a couple times, then to get my CPU temp I reboot and go to PC Health in the BIOS. I do have Mother Board Monitor, but I don't know how to make it check my CPU temp, all it's giving me are different sensor temps.
btw THANKS FOR THE INFO!!!!!

You have a Katmai cpu, and it usualy tops out around 600...if it's got the good cache chips..but the Katmai runs hotter than the coppies do...and can stand a little more heat, so 45c would be tolerable, but the cooler you can get, the higher, and more stable your overclock will be.
I have a PIII 450 and most are a garanteed 558mhz overclock..(4.5x124mhz)...but I never got to 600 stable with mine.
Good Luck, and welcome to the forum. :-)

If my PIII 450 is a Katmai, what other types of PIII's are there and why is mine called a Katmai?

there are Coppermine with different revisions and Katmai with different revisions. Coppermines are found starting from P3 550E. Your P3 450 is not coppermine. Yours is a Katmai that runs @ 512kb off-die L2 cache. And Katmai is not good for hard overclocking.
