Hey guys, I'm looking at getting a new vid card for my g/f and I've become a little stuck. I have the option of getting her a 9600XT for $249 or a 9800SE for $239. She plays alot of games and wants a good gaming card. Now I havn't heard alot about the 9800SE and I was wondering which card would provide the best performance for her, the 9600XT or the 9800SE.

Well, I'm guessing the prices you listed are in CDN.

The best choice in between these would definitely be the 9600XT as the 9800SE is basically a completely castrated 9800 (ie, 4 pipelines and 128 bit memory bus with the 9800SE compared to the 8 pipelines and the 256 bit memory bus of the 9800), and isn't really worth it at all, especially considering that the 9600XT greatly outperforms it for only $10 more.

i agree. this will most likely be the concensus here. how much is a 9800 non pro?

The 9600xt and 9800se at the same clock speeds perform exactly the same (128-bit mem bus, 8 pipes, r350-based core). The 9600xt has higher stock speeds (500/300 vs. 325/290, I think)

It's pretty much impossible to find a 9800np in Canada, and even if you do, it will be around $350-375, practically the same price as a 9800 Pro.

I'm from London, Ontario and I have found that some Toronto PC stores are selling the 9700 Pro for $279. This would be my choice. Also, there are some stores selling the 9600XT for sub $200. I'm not sure what store you are looking at, but there are some good deals out there if you don't mind paying for shipping. Just look around.
