ok, i am thinking of going dual opteron, but only purchasing one cpu now and later adding the second, due to financial reasons :). Only problem is, that I dont have enough money to buy some more ddr ecc ram. I have two sticks of 133mhz ddr ecc, that i could do a moderate overclock to 145. or i have some nice corsair 3200 c2 memory, but ofcourse, not ecc. Do dual boards require ecc? Are there any that dont? would 1.4 opterons overclock roughly the same as 1.6 etc?

check on the motherboards webpage
You need Registered/ECC not just ECC. The mobo will adjust for PC2100, PC2700 or PC3200. Mine is running some old Crucial PC2100 Reg/ECC at the moment while my Mushkin PC3200 Reg/ECC is back for RMA.
If you get only one now, make sure it is the latest stepping. There are Vcore differences between the early Opterons and the present ones and they won't work together unless they have the same Vcore rating.
