hye there - new in this, and need power for my 2.5 year old machine ( once top of the line... )
i saw on the CPU database that some had this work ...

i have CPUID ( ? ) and SOFTFSB - how can i use them if at all...

is there a way of using them?

Before anyone would be able to give any serious help you need to come across with some info. Like what mobo, basically just give a run down of your system.

Well as Luta said, we need some basic information about your system. I am pretty dang sure you are running a katmai so you should hit 533 with ease (Possible with the standard cooling). But we need to get some specs from you such as the Board brand and model and the RAM you are using. All the little details can make for a good overlook onto your situation.

Welcome to the Overclockers forums by the way. :)

Dang!! I never seem to notice when someone is new to the forum. Yes, welcome and happy OC'ing :)

Welcome to the forums!

I'm using a PIII450@540MHz on the 440BX chipset. I only have the original HS/fan combo also. All I did was the FSB modification in BIOS (100->120 can't go higher). Don't use Softfsb unless you know a little about your motherboard.

Good luck! Many people can push 600MHz with that puppy... not me unfortunately :(

I'd push on to 600 but, I don't want to just yet. I like the bragging rights of 384mb RAM. hehehehh It's fun! But I could probably hit 616 possibly stable with my HSF with tri fans that I pretty much rigged. That AVVID heatsink isn't a bad heatsink for 12 cranks I will say that. But a 450 Katmai is a pretty nice overclocker. Usually doesn't need much for voltage pushing since 2.0 is probably high enough for 600+ anyways. Just get some info on that board and we'll take a look into your situation. :)

thanks for the quick response...
well - i've written out my board, but if you need more...

these readouts are from CPUID: ( i guess some of the info is irrelevant, but idon't know what is or isn't so... )
CPU - PIII slot 1 ( sc242 connector ) - GenuineIntel original oem cpu ( ? )
family 6 model 7 stepping ID 2
MOBO - SE440BX-2 ( with latest BIOS 0 - p17 )
Internal clock - 448.96 - system clock 99.77
System Bus - 99.77 - Multiplier - 4.5
L2 Cache - 512K in 224.48 MHZ
MEMORY - 128 MB - i admit i don't know if 100/133 - I bought it more than 2 years ago ...
Voodoo 3 3K ( don't laugh ) @177.77 via 'V.ctrl'
don't know about Voltag and stuff...
( if you need more - please tell me )

that is about it... - I need to mention that this motherboard is very strict! - no junpers, hardly any Bios modifications
- but on the DATABASE i've seen guys with my CPU and my board and the did O/C it
so - any ideas? -
thanks in advance...

You have an intel seattle board, and while it is a rock stable board, it allows no overclocking options...you might be able to use "softfsb" but you will not have voltage options. I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but there it is...if you could save your dukats and get a new mobo, you will have a better chance, but not with intel boards. Intel compatible yes, like Abit, gigabyte, Asus, Msi. these boards all have overclocking options to one degree or another. I would recomend an Abit BE6....they can be had for a song now that it's younger brother has surpassed it. I have ran a PIII450 on an Abit board (be6) and had it to 558mhz at default voltage, and I think it is in the database.
Like I said, the intel board is great, but not clocker freindly. Sorry :-(
OOPs! I forgot to say Welcome to the forum...Warning if you hang around here you will learn a lot about computers and overclocking, and when you go outside, you will get fan noise withdrawls :-)

1st of all - thanks for the reply - nice to know people actually care...
2nd sorry to hear that about my board, but here is aquestion...
there are some people - in the data base - with my own Specs - and they had it o/c - how did they do that?

3rd - i'm planning of purchasing an amd CPU
( no budget limit :-) )
what is the best - athlon / thunderbird?
and which board will be the best - not just for overclocking - but for general performance, and ohh.. - DDR or not ( price is 4-5 times higher - and i've read that performance isn't that better )

thanks a lot guys

Actually, I'd wait on buying until the new .13 micron intel chips come out and make thier stand. Who knows what those puppies are going to do. Someone said the first .13 micron P3 is going to be a 1.2 but I'm not sure. But I hope to see some insane clocks with them. As for the current proc, I'd recommends a Soyo like mine ANY day. Never had any clocking issues with it. holds 126 stable and with a 600eb it holds 140+ stable. Only tested for a couple days though but it is a rock solid board for these old katmais :)
