I saw an external drive with a 10/100 connection and I thought it would be cool to have one set up on my network. Does anybody have any experience with these? It is supposed to have its own IP address and have a username and password protect. I want to know how well they work or can I access the drive from another puter outside the network? If so, I would like to get one instead of buying a whole PC. THe local store by my house has it for $200 and it is a 160GIG drive that you can exchange for a bigger drive.

Cheers, Jesse

Yes you can, you plug it into a Hub/switch with a CAT5 cable the network will pick it up and install it on the machines... its simple and easy :)...

This is commonly referred to as NAS, or Network Attached Storage. $200 seems extremely cheap... what brand is it? Good consumer level systems will cost hundreds and pro systems are thousands...

We have what's called !SNAP servers, which do the same thing, you can access them remotely, setup users on them, ect... They were VERY expensive.

The drive is called Tritton 120gig and it is $266.99 to be exact. It looks cool and I think it would be nice to back up my files on-the-fly and not have to buy another puter to do the same job. I wonder if the drive itself can be replaced with a 350gig and be accessable from outside the network across town?
