I have a Celeron 566 here in my desk that died (I think) over Xmas.
NOTE: It was in transport when it died, not in a system... Took out of System A to try in System B, then replaced in System A and no go...
[System A and B are a 5 hour drive apart]
It ran 850 with default voltage. (i was using Golden Orb).
It ran 952 with 1.55v... Voltage never went above 1.85v, and I saw 1020+
in windows on System B. 1.55v was the everyday voltage, ran nice and cool.
I inspected the core for chips / cracks / scratches, inspected all the pins, none are loose or bent or missing... Chip LOOKS fine.
So, what can I do with this chip? It was tried in a Celeron 600 system (without a Converter Card), and it didnt boot up in that either. However, It was working perfect the last time I had it in a machine... REALLY pissed me off. Only thing I can think of it that it somehow received a VERY large static shock?
Once back in the original machine, I tried 1.50v /1.55v and 1.85v and it wouldnt even POST with any of them...
So I hauled it out, and put my old C466 back in... It wouldnt boot either... eventually I got it to boot (I think it was a PS problem) and then I tried the C566 again... no go. While trying to get the C466 to work again, I got a new PS and MB, never really solved the problem (not posting after powerup) 100%. Tried the C566 again, no go. [I didnt want to believe it was dead]
============ FULL STORY =================================
Ok, so get this: [EXTREAMLY CONFUSING story, try to follow]
Was running C466, bought a C566 OC'd to 952 @ 1.55v, no probs.
Was going home for Xmas, so I took out the 566 chip to bring with me, to try in a friends box back home, because he had 1mhz fsb increments and pc133 ram. (I was stuck @ 112 fsb).
I was running out the door (had to catch the bus) and booted down the computer and took out the C566. Threw the C466 in (was going to use as a server over Xmas break) but after the power came on, it wouldnt boot.
I though "oh, well it must be setup for the other chip or something" so I shut it off and went home.
Once home, I tried the C566 in my friends box, and it worked fine... we played with it one night for only about 20 minutes, and saw 1000+ Mhz, which made my day. Took the C566 out and put it back in my bag. (protective wrap and in a box). [C566 was on Asus card, so pins were protected]
Few days later, came back to school, took out C466, replaced with the C566 and it would NOT POST after powering up. (Identical problem the C466 that I KNEW worked had when I left).
After alot of swapping etc, and power on-off-of-off etc I got the machine to boot with the C466. [During the swapping, I did get the C566 to 1/2 load Windows once, which again, is VERY weird]
Was having major problems, got a new Power Supply and MotherBoard, and the C566 still wouldnt work.
At this point I decided it MUST be the converter card on the CPU not the C566 itself.
March break came along, brought the C566 home, and my father took it to work (Computer Store). They put it in a C600 system (so I'm told) and said it would not work.
So there you have it... the story of a dead CPU that gave 1 last breath? (1/2 loaded windows) but then died permenatly?
I am VERY CONFUSED about the whole thing...
If anyone has any idea how to make this chip work, PLEASE let me know!
=============== END OF STORY ======================
Instead of buying another Celeron, I sold my Golden Orb, Asus Card and MB to a friend. I then bought a TBird900, KT7A-Raid, and Enermax 365 Power Supply. Also picked up 256mb Crucial CL2 Pc133
That little 566 cost me about $1000, I would still be running it today, because for what I need it for it is fast enough.
Really sucks to think an awesome chip got busted in my bookbag on the way back to school... If I ruined a chip, I would rather it go up in smoke while still IN my CPU box! grr...
Ideas? Comments? Anyone want to buy it? I'll sell it for the price of shipping!
