It was recommended that i post this in here...

"I have read through many threads but wasn't able to find what i was lookin for. I was wondering if anyone else with this board is experiencing an issue with lan connection after logging in. It usually takes about 1-2 minutes for the nvidia to get up and runnin, holding up my norton anti virus & internet security. I virtually can't open any other programs until the nvidia fires up allowing norton to get up an runnin. Afterwards, everything runs like a dream.
Im using the nvidia connection with both the 3com and 1394 connections disabled. I tried switchin to the 3com & had the same issue. I know its only a couple minutes but i put this system together so there wouldn't be any waiting."

The reply from Cowboy X:

"Strange, I have never heard of that happening . I use the Nvidia connection mainly . I have however noticed that my Norton Systemworks 2004 does significantly ( at least to me ) slow down my bootup process or at least the time until i can use everything on the desktop .

My boot was much quicker until I got Norton installed . Ask in our networking and security section and see iff anyone there has noticed this problem . Some guys will just tell you to use the USR lan which is known to do better than Nvidia's soloution but of course you have had problems with that as well ."

My reply:

"Yeah, i guess it could be the anti virus. Im using norton system works & internet security 2002. What i noticed was that the norton icon in the sys tray will be x'ed out with a red x. The internet security won't even start up till after a mintue or two, once norton is up & runnin. When i open crazy browser there is no internet connection till both of those are up and runnin. Weird."

See sig for machine details.

I too have a lag once the desktop comes up. I always assumed that it was my Zone Alarm Pro and/or the free AVG (anti-virus) software doing this.

I also use the Nvidia NIC and have the 3com disabled in the BIOS.

Welcome to the forums.

Hey don256us, got that issue figured thanks to a fellow member...

Do you use Norton Internet Security? I had the same problem when I ran NIS. I found this tip on it from RegScrubXP:

quote:

Click on Start button.

Select Control Panel.

Open "Network Connections".

Under "LAN and High-Speed Internet", right-click on your "Local Area Connection" and select "Properties".

Under "General" tab, select "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and select "Properties".

Select "Use the following IP address:".

Under "IP address" enter following : 192.168.0.1

Under "Subnet Mask:" enter following : 255.255.255.0

Click "Ok".

After I did that, the PC booted up a lot faster once into Windows and things responded once I clicked them while the regular windows processes were still loading (course a little slower than if everything was done loading and then clicked on them )

Hope this helps

Hey. Thank you very much for that info.

Unfortunately, it will no work out for me. As my machine is an ICS gateway, it is already 192.168.0.1/255.255.255.0. And I have never nor will never have Norton. As a computer Tech, I have seen too many problems with Noton to ever use it. For Pc protection, I use Zone Alarm Pro, and Free-AVG (anti virus).

I don't reboot my PC too often so I have been slow to resolve this issue. For me, I think it was the GUI version of the folding@home (f@h) client. I have not proved it yet so...

I switched to the text based folding client and several things that were odd about my machine seem to have gone away.

Since the text based version of f@h is faster than the GUI version, it works out for the better.

I just downloaded the latest Nvidia chipset and video drivers at work yesterday and will install them today. Maybe that will do something for me.

I do appreciate the info that you provided. As I have other Asus boards and several friends have the Asus as well, I may find a need for it.

If you're looking for a fun project, join the team 32 (overclockers.com) folding team. It's addictive though. If you want to get started you can PM me or click on the folding link in my sig to read more. We are in 3rd place and have recently had a surge in production. We are trying to catch the overclockers.com.au team.

No prob, just something i stumbled across that someone else had already posted. Thanks for the offer to join your team. If i had the spare time i would accept your offer but things are very busy for me at my command at the moment and outside of college classes, typhoon season will mostly dictate how my summer will go. We'll see.

Cheers,
