LOL....... This what I get with FX5900 turbo:
@ 530/930 = 6300
@ 540/930 = 6220
@ 520/920 = 7145
@ 525/925 = 7247 or 6422 ( when ambient temp is warm )
WTH?? GPU throttling??

maybe, but you know sometimes when u oc too far performance actually drops.
I know cause it happens to my 5600ultra

That could be 2 issues.
1. The card is over running at the higher speed, causing it to perform slower.
2. The cooling on the card could be upgraded, to keep it below a certain temparature during a long and extensive test. The card could have started out fast at that speed, but heat then slowed it down.

Exactly, the FX series has thermal throttling. I've seen reviews which indicate the exact same phenomenon when overclocking.

You can still prolong the value of a higher OC by getting better cooling, the key is to keep the cpu from reaching a certain temparature.
CPU throttling is when a CPU shuts down a bit, to cool off. If you can keep it cool enough at a certain speed, then you will see the gains from a good OC as should.
That was the reason of the first post, to stress that point.
I think I'm just trying to get a 100 post, must want to buy or sell something, lol!
I got this from ClubOC:
"GPU Throttling
When overclocking my stock 5900 I noticed something unusual. Unlike all the other cards I have successfully overclocked, this one would not lockup, or develop any artifacts as I upped the core clock speed. I could go up to 500mhz or more, but my benchmark scores would get worse. The card was clocking faster, but getting slower! From what I understand the new nVidia drivers use the thermal diode on the GPU to monitor the temps and will "underclock" the card in case of overheating. I thought that the GPU core had allot of speed left in it, but the drivers were killing the performance by throttling back."

Is there in anyways we can beat the throtling mechanism?? ...... I don't mind having the card which is not 100% perfect as long as I get over 7000 3dmark :D
I have an Albatron 5900EPV running with the 5950 reference bios. I took off the Albatron 3 fan heatsink and re-installed it with AS5. I also have a quiet (like 24cfm) 80mm fan blowing directly on the card from above with one of the zalman-like fan brackets. Even though the card carries 2.5ns ram, it clocks to 520/995 with this cooling configuration and a single 120mm enermax fan running about 1500rpm for case ventilation, delivering 7100+ on 3DMark 2003.

MAN becareful my fx card throttles back at 130c you must be getting it really hot to slow the gpu down

guess my setup is good then, my sig setup oced to xp 3200+, no gcard oc, and 3dmark set at 1024X960 32bit, I got a 7127.

is that in 3dmark 2003? or 2001?
a score that high? with an FX - what drivers you using?
with my radeon 9700PRO and a p4 2.4 @ 2.9 i only hit 5800 ona good day...

I think im getting the gpu throttle at stock speeds, nevermind overclocking!I dont believe the card is getting that hot,134c lol
So i think its a bug.Maybe a registry deletion somewhere can disable this feature.I had case temps of 15 -19c the other night and this thing was actin up!I already reset the heatsink with new thermal grease just in case,so theres no way that card is getting to 134c.or even close im thinkin more like 50c max!!!
This is really annoying me.If i cant solve this,im getting an ati 9600xt to replace it.

I rolled back to 4403's and all that went away! maybe it was a bad set of 5303 drivers and not the throttling afterall.

anyone know how to disable gpu throtling?

well i deleted a registry entry called thermal settings under nvtweak and it did nothing,so ill be damned! There has to be a registry hack somewhere!
Anyone agree? or ya think its set in the bios and unchangable?

I don't know about the heat sensor on FX5200, 5600, 5700 series card...... but for FX5900 series there is a thermistor diode built in the core.... and it monitor the temp. of the core It will trigger lower VGPU and MHz speed.
Somebody in internet will overcome this throttling problem oneday.

anyways the cure didnt last,bk to square1,I think this card is throttling early.Like way early!

with my ti4600 i have it can go to 750 on the ram but if i put ti that high my score drops as well - but that card does not have throttling.
I guess no searches on the web shows how to disable it? i looked but had no luck :(

I hate this FX5900 turbo..... everytime I increase mhz on either core or memory, I got lower 3dmark score.
550/950 = 7247
560/950 = 6800+
550/960 = 6600+
Why nvidia create this stupid gpu throttling?? and it get even worse when I increase vgpu, the 3dm03 score is even lower like 6200
So far nobody has knowledge to beat the throttling mechanism.

i've also read in other forums that the nvidia drivers also throttle back on the gpu and memory when you o'clock too high. kinda sux doesn't it? i think the only way around that is, 1.) improve the cooling on the card 2.) flash the bios to like a 5950 bios at your own risk of course.

Very nice website :p :p and definetely need everyone support for extensive bios collection. So please, anyone with new video card kindly make copy of their bios and submit it to http://www.mathiau.com/
BTW.... bios flash to 5950 ultra help to get consistent 3dmark score. You can OC the memory as high as possible ( with artifacts ) without sacrificing 3dmark score.
Another trick to get consistent 3dmark score is extra cooling. You need to add extra fan ( hopefully big one ) to blow underneath the card, especially the area near the ATX connector.

Well its been a while since that post and i have decided that i am not sure if my 5600u was throttling or not but that it definitely was a poor overclocker but ran fine at stock speed 400/800.
I recently gave it to a friend and bought a TI4200 for$80! at a local shop. Unfortunately it too is a terrible overclocker,in fact 5-10mhz past stock speed and it could be artifact city. So im stuck at 250/513. O well it still runs faster than the 5600u,not much but it does.Im happy.

There are about two ways I know of.
One is to set all speeds and volts at the same level, and to use rivatuner to have the card run at 3dmode all the time. Flashing the card using the asus bios would also achieve this, but be carefull.

When you flash the bios do you have to you need to go back to defaults on your cards specs?

If so, then why flash to begin with?
But I guess that wasn't the answer....No, you don't.

You can flash the card to whatever speeds you think it could handle, or the default speeds of the higher card you intend to use it as.
