Psst there is a 64bit version of windows xp that is strictly for IA-64 chips (Itanium) and it has been out for a few years now. Then they released the 3 versions of server 2003 in 64bit using IA-64 as well. Note that those are full OS's, fully supported and available for purchase; while M$ has this to say about the download you are refering too:

This program provides an opportunity to preview the next generation of Windows XP 64-Bit Edition while the product is still under development

It is supposed to be real anemic for drivers, Linux probably has better driver support.

32-bit apps take a performance hit because of Microsoft's implementation, even though the hardware doesn't dictate that a hit is necessary.

Apparently Themes must contain executable code because they aren't supposed to work.

I downloaded it last night along with Win2k3, installed Win2k3 but it bsod's on boot. Back to 64-bit Linux.

I downloaded and installed both without any problems last night. I tried some 32-bit apps on XP 64-bit which ran OK. But, my D-Link Wireless NIC 32-bit drivers won't load in either OS. Of course, I had the same issue with Linux.

You can't use any existing drivers with Windows for x86-64, the vendors have to produce new drivers for everything.

In Linux, all the drivers I used recompiled just fine 64-bit. If you were trying to use binary-only drivers from D-Link, that would be a problem though.

It's free for a year. Not long enough to see any real apps coded in 64 bit :p
