View Full Version : Woohoo! But, Bad memory! Bad!

Playing on a bit of a hunch yesterday, figuring that I probably wasn't so unfortunate to have gotten -two- Celeron II cC0 600's that weren't even capable of running at 900Mhz, I did some playing around with some of the other settings that I was running, specifically the Memory clock settings. I had been running the memory at Host+33Mhz, since I was trying to run around 100Mhz FSB, and the memory is -supposed- to be CAS2 PC133 memory. With the memory set to +33 and CAS2, the highest I could run the computer doing anything beyond running Netscape was 750Mhz, above that UT, 3DMark2000 and occasionally even running Sandra's CPU/Multimedia tests once would cause errors and corruption. After dropping the memory down to the same speed as the host, I can suddenly get -much- higher! At 1.95v, I can run stabily in Win98 at a Gig, and even manage to play through a round of DM in UT before locking (looks like I'll need to do some burning in to get this chip to do a Gig truly stable- but then, it is a two-day-out-of-the-box chip, so even hitting it in light use makes me happy!). I would never have thought that it was that memory setting that was holding me back... I need to get some better memory! This would also explain the rather crappy Sandra memory scores (300/320 even with 4-way and CAS2, bad even for an Apollo Pro-133A chipset). I have to wonder if anyone else may be having the same problem as I was...
But, Whee! I've finally got the computer running up pretty much where I want it to! Once more, having to modify my sig...

Nice that you found the problem.....Are you going to be using both of those chips, or 1? I would be happy to one off of you. I need a new Celeron II 600, as the one i have now is cB0, and even @ 2.0v it is not stable @ 1 gig. It has burned in for a long time. I am getting a peltier today (80watt) and could use a new chip. If you have any of these, i would be happy to bargain for them :
1.............................Celeron II 600 @ 1 gig+ 1.9v --- 1.95v
2.............................Alpha Pal6035 HS/F Combo
3.............................Fop38
4.............................Cold plate
I was offered a fop38 and a Celeron II 600 that does 900 @ default voltage (not tested higher) and shipping for 70 dollars. Tell me if you can beat that, of match it. Thanx!

For the moment, I'm planning on holding on to both chips. I want to burn in the new retail chip and see what it can do, and then put the system-pull OEM chip back in and see how high I can push it (now that I've got the memory problem worked out, until I pick up somethin that will do faster- some 150 TinyBGA sounds nice :D). After that, what happens with the slower chip will be up to my parents, ironically- my little brother's 11th birthday is coming up in July, and I've offered the slower chip (and probably the current, annoying, stick of memory) towards them having my build him his own computer for his birthday. I don't plan on pushing the computer I build for him- much. ;D If they decide not to have be build one for him, then I'll plan on selling it, but that will probably be a month or so down the road. Sorry! :/ If I do decide to sell it, I'll probably see about posting it in the for sale section here- I might be able to get more for it on eBay, but I'd be happy to settle for breaking even and helping out a fellow overclocker.
