Ok here is my situation, i want to connect my computer which i recently built that is in my basement to the internet, the problem is the dsl is upstairs. I know im going to need to get a router or something but other than that im clueless (very limited networking knowedge). What type of setup would work best in my situation and how much will it cost?

Yeah I would suggest a Linksys router/switch the BEFSR41

http://linksys.com/Products/product.asp?grid=34&scid=29&prid=561

put that up with the modem, plug the modem into the WAN port, and get a length of cat5, drill a hole in the floor by the router.switch and run the line to your downstairs computer. thats the quickest way :)

Is there an advantage to using Cat5e instead of Cat5 for this purpose? I just got DSL myself. One machine is hooked up to it, but I have 2 more I want to hook up as well, so I need to start buying some cable. :-)
