The first PIII's were Katmai's. These were pretty close to glorified PII's. Their external L2 caches ran at half of the Clock Speed, and were very unenthusiastic about hearing "get a move on, Gramps! We ain't got all day."
If you really want to OC your PIII 450 Katmai, learn how to safely crack and remove its black plastic jacket. Then purchase a HSF that will contact both the processor itself, and the L2 cache chips. Frankly, I don't think it's worth the time, money or effort.
In the meantime, start by raising the Front Side Bus speed in SMALL steps. Try 103 Mhz. Try 105 Mhz, then try 107 or 110, or whatever comes next. The Katmai's CAN be OC'd. The trouble is: they're no longer a worthwhile processor to bother with. I suggest buying a Slocket, checking your Bios version, update if necessary. Celeron II's OC very well, as do some of the PIIIE Coppermines.
Buying a ~$75.00 HSF for a Katmai PIII 450 doesn't make sense.
thankyou verymuch for that insight,i think im gonna put it in the garden and blow it up!!
