I am a pretty excperienced overclocker and I just got a new PIII 850. Plenty of cooling but it still gives me probs. I have it at 952, 1.95v and at full load it runs at about 45C. Seems a little hot to me. I can't run it at any lower VC without crashes. Is this normal for an 850. Even at 850 i have to run it at 1.8v so it will be stable. Very odd to me. Any help would be great.

as you know its running to hot, why the high CV i'm not sure, just hope you can fugure out your heat problem, if the chip is new take it back and get another one before you cant. out of couriosity why 2 fans on the Alpha?

I agree with O.H. in you should take it back b4 you can't, and if you can't then lower you fsb to default, and raise your cv to as high as 1.95, and run it for a couple of days like that, and try to overclock after that.
some have had great results that way.. one guy said he burned in for an hr. and it worked for him. but if you have an alpha, and you're still running 45c, then you would have run into probs at stock settings durring the summer anyway. mine runs at no more than 29c under load, and idles at 24c....I know it's a big swing...but look at my sig.
Mine is probably the exception to the rule, but I can say that most PIII's will get weird on you at around 38c when O'C'ed, which is why most peeps try to get their cpu just under ambient temps
good luck

You sure that alpha is mounted right?
Maybe you should make sure its getting good contact with the cpu core and has grease on it.
That temp is very high for a alpha 3125.
A cpu that wont run at spec fsb & voltage with the heatsink installed right isnt right at all.

Well for starters you could try lapping your hs and cpu, and mateing them with as, if that dose not improve anything, you might want to try the 'burn-in' process for a while and then try again for the higher speeds, although I heard your chip didnt overclock exreamly well.

Good luck anyways, and be carefull if you chose to lap, besure you read up on it.

I have the same problem w/ my PIII 850. I can run at 933 w/o any heat issues (30-35C) but anything over 933 pumps a lot of heat. I'm using a generic, orb style cooler w/ Arctic Silver...just a dab. Arctic silver helped w/ my temp but I need a bettter cooler.

I have heard many mentiones made of the 850 being a "diffucult" overclocker. I"m running 933 on stock voltage (1.65) on a Soyo SY6BA+IV.

I have had the 850 over a Gig at 1.90 volts but the heat is waaaay too much to handle. I would do as suggested, check the contact on your heatsink....run w/ your cover off a while and see if an ambiant temp. diff. helps cool the CPU more....You should not have any problems w/ the cooler your running.....good luck>

Just wanna add some stuff here....went home on my lunch break and ran 3DMark2001 at stock voltage and HW default (100x8.5). I let 3DMark run about half way through a 1024x768x32Bit Benchmark and then aborted and booted to the BIOS to check my temps...(haven't found any other software that gives a more accurate reading than the BIOS).

The processor was running at 105-108 F...I think thats about 40-42 C. Pretty darn hot based on all a lot of other processors. My Celery 433 @ 540 runs a constant 35C under load, about 30 at idle.

The Intel Thermal Spec for the 850 is 80 Degrees C!!!!! That's pretty damn hot for a meltdown. After a brief glance at the CPU database for the 850, I'm seeing a lot of lower temps w/ stock heat sinks and thermal paste.....makes me wonder!!

First off I just want to say thanks for all the help. I've reatached the the HSF about four times now, Allready laped everything, I moded my Alpha to add another intel stock fan on the side (trust me, I am the king of afro-engineering), already have the Artic on right (not to much), oterwise I still don't know. I will try to run a burn in for a while. Might call the place and see how hard it is to return. Forgot to mention but it is also an OEM and not a retail. I think that might have something to do with it. Also When it's under full load the VC drops from 1.95v to 1.92v. Don't know about that either. Thanks guys.

If you look at the intel specs closley.
The 850 has 2 different notes at the end depending on the id.
One requires a motherboard with split pane voltages.
(note 9)
Maybe this has something to do with it.
