View Full Version : Which P4 is the best to overclock?
Looking to build an Asus P4T system, but not sure which P4 to buy. Which has the best headroom to overclock?
TIA,
k.
I wouldn't recomend buying a p4, at least not at the moment, they are due to bring out a new p4 and motherboard chipset which are imcompatible with the current ones. Also I am not a big fan of the p4, they are far more expensive than the tbirds, even after the price cut they will still be expensive and they are outperformed by tbirds running 500mhz slower in most cases, very few games/programs perform better on the p4 and even then not usually as much as you would expect given the clock speed and the fact that this is a new chip, if you are insistant on getting one though, then the slower it is the more head room it will have, the 1.4ghz chip is probabally the best

Well, Tim is right in that intel is coming out with a new P4 which will be incompatible with current systems, but every gamer that owns a P4 is totaly happy with it, and if you like streaming media, then you can't do better than a P4. we all know about the P4's shortcomings with the floating point, but few games take advantage of the floating point anyway, if any.
I agree with Tim with the 1.4, and I think they have a 1.3 out now...both would have real good headroom for clocking. In multimedia apps the P4 is king with it's second generation sse instruction set.
Also Abit has a new P4 mobo out, and might have more options in the softmenu.
Good Luck

I agree that you might want to wait with the new chipset and die shrink comming soon. But I think that you made a good choce with the P4. Go to Sharky's and they have a good article on the P4 1.5 Ghz and overclocking it. And I seriously doubt that an overclocked P4 running at over 2.0 Ghz with mad bandwith is going to have any probs with any CPU.

I'd wait a few months for the socket migration before buying a P4 if I were you.
But if you are going for a P4 now, I suggest you get the fastest one available (the 1.7G should be available shortly), as P4s have a lot of OCing overhead and you could make good use of the higher multiplier availible.
