Ok, I'm running XP on a Shuttle AN-35N 400 motherboard. I bought a new case with front usb/speaker ports but I have yet to get the usb ports to work. (speaker ports work fine) Whenever I put a usb device into the front ports I get a message popup that says USB Device Not Recognized - One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it, click this window for more information... etc... so I click the window and I get another window that shows a little hardware tree with USB Root Hub (3 ports) at the top, underneath it are 3 more USB icons, 2 of them say Unused Port while a third says Unknown Device. In my device manager I have pretty much the same thing, 1 Unknown Device, 2 USB Root Hubs, 2 Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controllers, and 1 Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller. The case manufacturer sent me a replacement set of front ports but it didn't help. Has anybody run into this themselves? Hopefully someone can help...

Have you connected the front ports to the motherboard correctly?
If you have the type where all the usb cables are separate, its easy to connect them the wrong way.
Also have you tried different USB devices?
Perhaps you just need the drivers installed, winXP doesn't recognise all devices.. What is it you're trying to connect?

I have the type with one cable that connects to the USB header on the motherboard. There's only one way to connect it so I'm sure its on right. I'm trying to connect a Logitech Wingman Extreme Digital joystick. It works fine when I use the rear ports so I know thats not the issue. Also, the headers on the motherboard are fine, I can connect them to a couple USB ports that go in one of the slots in the back of the case and they work great. Man, this gets more and more mysterious the more I think about it.
you should've gotten a wire spec wit hthe ports and also in the manual it tells you what pin is for what. I'd look at the wiring and make sure it is correct. I had a similar issue with my MSI K7D awhile back. All it was was 2 wires switched around.

It could also be that it is a weak USB signal. See if you can get a differnet set of wires.

I got a different set along with the replacement ports.
Most probably what comes into my mind is porbably the cables are connected incorrectley. Well you've mention that device is working is working correctley when connected to the rear ports. So best thing is as "Xtc4u" said try to get the manual and check the calbe connected methhod. Go through the colors so it will be easy to identify.

Crap, I can't find a pin-out anywhere for these front ports.
