Ok i just built my first computer. I'd like to get my PIII 800 up to a gig, dont know too much about overclocking. I know i have to up my fsb and maybe up the voltage a bit, but whats with the fsb speeds with the (1/4), (1/3) etc mean? If 1000 is too much to hope for, any recommendations on a good overclocking speed to be stable w/ my system? Running a dual operating system of win2k and win98.
300w power
abit vp6 mobo

256mb pc133 sdram
SB Live!
WD 30 gig hd
Geforce2 mx
Sony cd/rw
nic card
modem
if you can get up to an fsb of 166mhz then it may be possible, this will be running your agp bus at 83mhz, most cards will be ok and your pci at 41mhz, this could be a problem with any pci device, sound card, modem, nic and even the hardrive, you only way to find out something like this is to try, you should slowly up the fsb in the bios, one step at a time, boot into windows check it's stable and repeat this until it becomes unstable, then increase the voltage slightly and keep going, don't go over 1.9v though, also if you have the standard intel cooler you may need better, and alpha or the fop 38 will be necessary for this speed really, some people claim to run this fast with the intel cooler but they are a minority

Phil, your explaination is always good.. I think you spoke it in little bit too high level. but keep in mind mind to tell him that he needs really good overclocking RAM. I think at this point, because of his 800EB chip, it would be the RAM that his system will depend on.

i dunn think most of the chips of 800eb would be able to go up to 1ghz........since i had a few and none of them would go higher than 850 without locking up or crashing or....etc

I have my 800EB at 1002mhz so it is possible!
Just means that you have to run at 167 fsb.
it also helps if you have a mobo that can cut your ram speed down so that its not trying to run at the same speed as your cpu fsb , my CUSL2 has this function and I must say that its the most user friendly mobo I have owned.
anyway good luck on your quest to hit 1ghz.
