View Full Version : My new system is up!! Temp OK?
I'm sitting at the old system with my new one right beside me. (Living room is a mess!) I have the mobo lying on the antistatic bag, all drives hooked up, a 92mm fan blowing across the board. Only card installed is my Vodoo3 2000 PCI. ASUS CUSL2-C, Celeron2 600, Step Thermodynamics Kodiak 6180 HSF with Arctic Silver 2. I haven't installed Win ME yet. I bumped the Vcore to 1.90V running at stock speed of 600. This HSF came with a "Throttlebody" fan RPM feature. The fan is a 40mm. The ambient temp is 25C the MB temp is 29C, CPU is 39 -40C. The fan is running at 6958 RPM (LOUD and won't live long at this RPM) Before I install the mobo in the mid-tower case, I want to know if these temps are alright. Seems to me that the heatsink should be hot. It's only slightly warm to the touch. Been running for 45 minutes. I noticed that the heatsink will slide slightly on the CPU with about 2 lbs of lateral force. (????) Should this be? Should I remove the HSF clean chip and HSF, bend the clip for more pressure and re-install?
Thanks for advise folks. Gotta go shopping (YUK!!) with wife now(pay da piper thing)..
I'm leaving it running since temp has been stable for almost an hour. Gonna throw the dog and cat out first though.

Thanks a700. I disagree about ME though. I installed it over 98se on this system and am very happy with performance and stability.
I think I will re-install the HSF after bending the clip for a little more pressure. I think I lapped the heat sink so much that I may have taken a bit of height off of it resulting in not enough pressure. (see post in cooling "Can I stop lapping now?"
I also decreased the RPM of the CPU fan to 5350 rpm with no change in the temp. Strange..

lap your hsf, your temps are good, not great though. A little high for an intel chip, but you are running a much higher voltage, and that is actually pretty good. Keep them where you are and you should be in great shape! Hope everything goes well.

Your temps may be to high you will need to install your OS and run a game or seti or something to find out what your temps are under full load, its normal for your heatsink fan to move across the chip a little bit some people do notice a rise in temps if the move there HSF on the chip and then they need to re apply thermal compound to get there temps back down others have no problem wiggling there HSF. You should try and keep your temps in the 30C -38C range under full load. I think if your ambient temps were a little lower that would help. DO NOT BEND THE CLIP if you do this you take a good chance of busting of the little tab on the socket that holds it down. Also you do not want your HS to be hot or you could fry that new baby :) by the way i'm running WIN ME and i love it boots quick and is quite stable.
Thanks dunno260 and outhouse. I feel much better now. I think I'll go ahead and install the Mobo without reinstallng the HSF. I already lapped it. I just never heard about being able to "slide" the HSF before. I'll test under load and if temps get too high, I'll pull that suker and try again. The chip might run cooler when installed in the case with the 2cool PC + and the (soon to be) 120mm front blowhole and 92mm rear exhaust. Got the blowhole cut (looks great) just gotta get a 120mm fan.
Yeah I think WinME rocks. Love that fast boot.

You may have put too little or too much thermal grease. try resetting the heatsink. Temps are a little high for that chip. On a golden orb, i full loaded (Celeron II 600 cB0 1.5v default) @ 42C with voltage @ 2.0v and 983mhz.
Never try to bend the clip! I lost my chip, and my slokect because i did.

my temps used to be about 135 while playing UT. I installed a lapped FOP32 and now it maxes out around 110. not sure what that is in C.
right now it's running 44c and I'm VERY happy with my FC 933

Update!! Temps are now much better! CPU is 32C as I type. I took HSF off relapped new ARctic Silver 2 and I DID bend the clip just a tad. Doesn't slide around any more. Running 1.93 vcore @ 66Mhz FSB. Gotta DL FAH and some other burn in progs . Just got nic installed and thought I'd let ya know whats up. T-minus 5 minutes to Sopranos. Thanks for the help fellow OC'ers.!

Actually I had been playing UT and Folding is always running.......so consider that my full load temp most of the time. It's also almost 90 here...
Ive been "folding" for an hour. Ambient temp is 74F/23C -Cpu never exceeded 39C/102F. Haven't installed any other games or CPU Stress programs yet. My fan setup is A 120mm "blowhole without a fan" lower front with a 2COOLPC + ( http://www.overclockers.com/articles69/ ) right behind that and a 92mm exhaust beside power supply at top rear of case. Oh, I forgot, I have one of those slot mounted bloers exhausting right under the Voodoo3 2000.These temps seem pretty good to me based on my memory of other members temp specs. I may not bother with installing a fan in that front blowhole, just put a used "bounce sheet" filter on it and let it be.

I also use WindowsME, I upgraded WIN95 OSR2 version(the best windows until now) and its just as stable, with lots of added features. Of course, I downloaded all the updates etc as soon as I installed. It even found a Trojan Virus for me!

Glad the virus was dicovered. What kind of temps are you getting with those 3 fans @ alpha?

I don't understand why you guys like WIn Me, in my new system it's done nothing but give me trouble, I'm always getting the BSOD and it's just messing things up, things were better with my old computer running Win 95

Thats really strange! I have a friend who bought a computer that had WinME on it. Nothing but problems with it. I even reformated and reinstalled with all the latest drivers and still all kinds of BSOD's.
But I have WinME installed on my system and runs awesome! A hell of alot more stable then Win98, And just as fast. It seems like for most people, either it's great or its really bad!

this comptuer runs like a cat with his tail on fire under ME.....my computer beside me refuses to boot with it (literally will NOT boot after 3 installs).
All depends on hardware. If it likes your setup........it LOVES you. If it doesn't, It'll spit at you every chance it gets!
I ran folding@home all last night and all of today at 1.9v, 66Mhz FSB. Idles at 32 with 24c ambient. Bumped FSB up to 89Mhz now running folding@home and playing SOF. Max temp was 42C. Very stable but it's only been running a little over an hour at this speed. 801 mhz. Gonna drop voltage to 1.8 and see if it'l post.
Ahhhh the chase is on! Good luck, hope you can get this puppy to 112 FSB!! That's where the magic number lies....
Those temps are a bit higher than what I had, at 2.05v. How's your case fan setup?? Cables blocking airflow?? I usually ran about 5-7c cooler loaded that what you mentioned.
Mr B
Thanks, Mr B. Nothing better than advice from the Celly Master!! LOL. Ok you are probably gonna scold me for this. My cooling is actually incomplete :
My fan setup is A 120mm "blowhole without a fan" lower front with a 2COOLPC + ( http://www.overclockers.com/articles69/ ) right behind that and a 92mm exhaust beside power supply at top rear of case. Oh, I forgot, I have one of those slot mounted bloers exhausting right under the Voodoo3 2000. I think temps will drop when I get that front 120mm hole filled with a big a*s fan. I have a "dryer sheet filter" over the hole in the mean time. I have dropped back to 66Mhz FSB at 1.95volts. Running FAH constantly.Temp right now is 38C 100F , ambient is 23C 74F. .
CPU HSF is a Kodiak 6180 from Step Thermodynamics. Soon as I can , I'm gonna put a SwiftechMC370 on her. Of course I have the Arctic Silver2 on.
I forgot to mention that every cable and wire in this mofo is wrapped, even the dang LED and power supply wires! LOL, got carried away. I folded the 80 conductor cable and split, stacked and wrapped the secondary and floppy cables. I used the spiral type cable wrap from the Shack. I just would hate to get an inferior 120mm and can't find a YSTECH or SUNON locally and will have to order on-line. Wifey will kill me if I put one more charge on the card right now. >( . Guess I better lay off the computer tonight and do a little "homework" to loosen those purse strings! ;D
The Black Pearl has a gold plated heatsink on the Northbridge ;I wonder if i need a fan on it? I may put a blowhole on top also.
Guess I should take this topic to cooling..Sorry , got excited and was way late/early when originally posted.
Thanks all for the advice and support!
