My guess would be after a perfectly bug free 32bit OS.
So my guess is never. If you are looking for standard MS junk than probally about a year before it only crashes a few times a week.
As for other options you can look in Mandrake for 64bit, Im not sure what else is out, but linux is really the only other option.

microsoft and bug free in the same sentence??
i think not
if they made a bug free piece of software, no one have any reason to buy the next new version

Last I heard, the XP-64 release was pushed back to September 04. You can expect it to be reasonably bug free by then. 3rd party drivers however, may be a different story..
