Hey I am new at this. I have a PIII 1 gig, in a gigabyte GA-6VX7B-4X. I want to OC this, however the dip switches are having no effect on the clock speed. What should I do?

Read the manual, maybe you need to change the bus speed in the bios.

thanks. I read the manual, uped the bus speed 7.5 x 140 for 1050mhz, but windows would not load. I was not able to boot from 7.5x150

You can try setting the memory timing to 3-3-3 if its at 2-2-2.
Do this to test if its the memory holding you back as running at 3-3-3 is not as fast as 2-2-2 and you would be better off at 1ghz with 2-2-2 than 1050 with 3-3-3.
Also you should make sure your pci and agp bus are as close to 33pci and 66agp as you motherboard will allow.
Then you can try setting the vcore voltage higher if your motherboard lets you.
Dont go over 1.9v thou and watch your cpu temp closley.

I have the newest AMI bios for this board, but I do not ahve access to FSB in the BIOS. Can I install another type of bios for this board that will allow better controll of those things?

Sorry I cannot answer that.
Maybe someone who has your motherboard can.
Goodluck.

as far as your bios got to the MB's web site and check for a bios update there if no luck go to AMI and see if there is a update there

by the way did your MB \motherboard come in a compaq or a dell or gateway?

there is also some software that can help you change your FSB but it is chip specific it can be found at tweakfiles.com if your chip is not in there i think as long as your clock generator matches your all rite but check in some of the post that deal with this and you will get better answer's

have you tried to raise your core voltage to your processor? if you did you should have no problem getting your chip to 1200 at 160fsb use 1.9 for this setting but be prepared to get better cooling or get ready to do some cooling mods to get your temps down. the best thing to do is to raise your fsb in as small of a increment as you can and if it is unstable and wont boot raise your core voltage a little and then try again and check your temps all the time 60C is max for your chip mine got unstable at 50c and now i can only get to 164fsb
