heelo, I am building a direct die prommie and am placing a tec on my radeon. I have two temperature probes with lcd screens to hopefully deliver more accurate temps than MBM.
I would like to place each probe right up against the core of each device, but do not know if I can get accurate temps since the area around each core must be covered with dielectric grease. Can I still place the probes there?
Would I have to run the probe for the radeon UNDER the shim to avoid the block not sitting flush against the core? The wires are *very* thin. Just curious what others have done.
Thanks for your advice.

This is what a friend of mine and I did on his Radeon 9600XT:

The XT had a rubber gasket materal that we cut to make room for the thermal probe. before seating the coldplate and plet and cooler, we spread dielectric grease over the probe and surrounding area.
If you have a 9800, and i believe you do judging be the shim you are talking about. I believe there is a way to remove the shim on the 9800, (I have this card, though i have not tried this myself). If you can remove the shim and cut a notch in it to make room for the probe to slip in, that would be best. An alternative would be to grind up a section in your cold plate to let your wire fit over the shim without having a clearance issue.

so I guess the dielectric grease does not foul the temp readings too much?

No, it doesn't transfer heat.

er - if it doesn't transfer heat I guess I have to get it as flush against the core as possible and not get and grease in between the core and probe -

yeah, cut the the excess material off the tip of the probe, but dont cut the probe element, if u look closely at that pic u will see how some is cut off so that it can touch the core flush.

oh, and also, are you sure your temp probe monitors can read below freezing? Mine cant, lol. it just freaks out and beeps alot til it rises above 0c or 32f. hope that was helpful.

if I hit 0c they display "LLL" fine with me, since I don't think Ill be down there. I expect 5c to 20c on cpu and gpu. WHo knows though?

did you check out our thread?
Ross's 9600xt idles at below freezing, the pelt is air cooled!
It could be possable that you will see that LLL from time to time.

nice! my pelt is slightly upgraded - 85watts with a supposed max of 110. Freezing would be lovely!
