Has anyone tried to upgrade the Celeron in a HP 6700 series box to a PIII? All the info I can find on Intel's site says the 810 board should auto-detect voltage, fsb and multiplier. I know the bios supports multipliers up to 9 since it's currently running a cel600. HP says it won't work but can't or won't tell me why.

Sounds like you have an "LX" chipset, and the LX would only do from 66 to 83mhz, when you boot up, if you can see the post screen, it will tel you what chipset you have, if it is an LX, then your only course would be a fast celeron.
You could go to their website, and try to download the latest bios, and while there, look at the changes the update does.
If your system says 44BX upon bootup, then all it might take is a bios update.
Good luck

Unfortunately, neither the post screen nor the bios show any chipset info. I have tried cross referencing the chipset numbers from CPUID on the Intel website with no luck. I can't get Sandra 2001 to run so no help there - invalid page faults in .exe. I really hate to drop more money on a new board for this machine :(.

Thanks for the help though.

i have a HP8600 series, no problems opening sandra, but since it's an OEM machine, it's worthless to try to o/c, but i'm not sure about changing the chip though.....i haven't seen any jumpers on my board
