I've been waiting for well over a year for this. Just have'nt had the money. Been running this AMD 1600+ for a long time now.

Been doing a lot of research and this is what I've decided on. I want to keep it under $950.00.

Lite-On Model# MT 950 (Black) ATX Mid-Tower Case w/ 300W P4 Ready Power Supply

Optorite Black Internal DVD+/-RW Dual Retail Drive, Model DD0201

Western Digital Raptor 36.7GB 10,000RPM SATA Hard Drive, Model WD360GD

Mushkin 184 Pin 1GB(512MBx2) DDR PC-3500 Level One Dual Pack

ABIT 865PE Chipset Motherboard for Intel Socket 478 CPU, Model "AI7" -RETAIL

Intel Pentium 4/ 2.4C GHz 800MHz FSB, 512K Cache, Hyper Threading Technology - Retail

POWERCOLOR ATI RADEON 9600PRO

Along with a black keyboard and mouse and floppy drive. Price comes to just about $930 shipped. Don't need a big drive since I run a file server on another PC so the 36 gig drive should be fine. Not planning on really even doing any overclockering right away either so the retail fan will be good for now. Plus I know the PSU may be a bit small but I can alway upgrade that later. The 300w should do me fine for starters.

From what I've gathered seems to be the best system for the money.

What do you guys think?

If you don't plan on overclocking much, why not go Athlon 64? It is better performance at stock, and it is around the same price range. (Little more expensive)

With a CPU fan the difference between a 2ghz Athlon 64 and a 2.4ghz P4 is gonna end up being around $60 to $70 dollars. That's to steep for me right now. So I think I'm gonna stick with the P4. I will be doing some heavier overclocking I'm sure in the future anyway. When I get the cash to buy a nice HSF.

How much is that graphics card? Radeon 9600 Pro's yield better performance for a similar price, unless you're getting a really good deal on that 5600.

The FX5600 Ultra is $125. That is probobly the one main thing I was considering switching and it was to a 9600pro.

I just looked at newegg and found a POWERCOLOR ATI RADEON 9600PRO for $21.00 more. The core speed is 400mhz vs the FX5600's core speed of 350mhz. The DDR speed is 600mhz though. So it's 100mhz slower then the FX5600 but I doubt that would be a big deal.

I did switch them so I guess now you can scratch the FX from that list and add the ATI Radeon 9600 pro.

It all looks fine to me and quite cost effective, the first thing I would replace when you get chance is a new PSU, like you said 300W is pretty small. Newegg has the Fortron 350W for $20 wich is a bargain if you ask me for a nice PSU. :)

Actually the case I was gonna get is out of stock now. So I'm getting a different one now and it has a 400W PSU. So that's a plus as well. A few more bucks but worth it.
