I just got a new PIII 850 and an SA6R (i815E) from abit. I hooked it up and I have a big alpha HSF with an extra fan on it so I know the cooling is good. My old CPU was a PIII 500E and it ran at about 35C under full load. With the new CPU (SL49G cB0 1.65v) I get 39C idle and 50+ under full load. I can imagine it would run a little hotter but not to this extent. I've got thr Arctic silver paste and I know that it's on there nice and good but have no idea why it's that hot. Sys temp is about 30C so wtf?
What are you using to get the temp reading?
The abit software, bios, ect.
i have same cpu w/abit BE 6 II. The load temp matches mine but my idle temp is about 8 degrees less than yours.
I had to take off my heatsink and lap it and bend the holders to tighten it up... that lowered the idle temps for me. (along with some Radio Shack heatsink paste)

I have used both the Bios and the hardware monitor. both show an idle of 38-40C and the hardware monitor shows the 50+ load temps. The HSF is allready perfectly flat and I have the Acrtic Silver paste on there. I've tried reseating the HSF on there about ten times so I think that there might be another problem.
mine cooled down a little after I burned it in with one of the @home programs.. or sisoft burn-in wizard... but watch temps.
you are well within tolerances for the cpu... maybe just needs time.

Katabatik,
Was the cooling setup (with Artic Silver) on the old P3 500 exactly the same as your new P3 850 processor? or have you not applied the Artic silver on the p3 500? The reason why Im asking this is because if you apply little thick layer of Artic Silver on any chips, it will actually insulate the heat and help your CPU get hotter. How have u applied the Artic Silver on the chip?

I'll try the burn mabye tonight. I've put just enough ASP on because I allready went through that phase where more was always better. I'm getting my PIII 500 from my friend tonight so I can see if that also runs hot now. I'm also getting one of those spacers for the HSF so mabye that'll help. Oh yeah, get this, I was just trying to get teh HSF off my new Geforce2 Pro and I nicked off two resistors and now the thing runs so hot it could cook a steak, ummm steak, I superglued them back on and am goiing to RMA it.

You might also want to try to adjust the CAS times on your memory if possible. I'm able to run a few C cooler w/ I run 333 vs. 222 w/ my 850.

i'm going to try and put my old PIII 500 in there today and see if the temp is that high still. I aslo got a spacer for my HSF so I'll see if that helps.
