View Full Version : Wait on Prescott... but how long until they're good?
Due to the recent discoverings of Prescott performance it looks like it's going to be a while before it's worth it to even buy one.
I've personally decided to give the Prescott a core stepping revision or two before getting one. The heat issue and Northwood-like (or less than) performance is enough to not buy into it.
I just wonder, how long do you think it will be until they have worked out the kinks (i.e. heat issues)? Will it take a move to another socket type? And how long until the 3.0E or 3.2E's will be overclockable to 4.0ghz easily? That's when I will strike!
I hope the Prescotts on the socket 478 will see some improvements rather than seeing them only on the new socket type because I'd really like to be sporting a highly overclocked Prescott on my current motherboard (p4p800 dlx) at some point in the future.
Good question, wish I had an answer. I'd just wait until Intel officially releases a new stepping and then watch for improvements in the results. Increased yields should apply to both socket 478 and the new socket, since they will both be the same basic core. Will probably be a least a couple months before we start seeing noticeable improvements.

How fast can the Prescott get on socket 478?
Ah, a few months... thats so long to wait :P I dont know if i can hold out. Ah well, i suppose if i can't wait i'll just get a nice Northwood and overclock the heck out of it.
I like to think of these Prescotts of having one nice positive attribute: They're going to drive down the prices of "old" Northwood technology.
Blockdoc: 3.4ghz will be the highest speed chip available on the socket 478 platform. (released in both a northwood and prescott cpu at 3.4ghz). But my main want is a 3.2 or a 3.4 Prescott that is overclockable in the higher ranges (4+ ghz). That's what waiting for new core steppings will accomplish.

Are you asking the noob question or are you asking what is the prescott supposed to scale to with this core in the future.
3.4ghz is supposed to be the last prescott chip released on the 478 core if i remember.

Well im sure with a 3.2-3.4 northwood that you could hit 4ghz or close to pretty effectivly with some water cooling and possibly on air if you get a lucky pick and it still be faster then the prescott for speed wise due to its shorter pipeline.
The word out now is the D0 stepping Prescott will be out "possibly" in March. The 3.4E will be only made in this flavor. So, when you see the 3.4E released, then that means the new stepping is out. The lower speed Prescotts will eventually be made in the new stepping, but the older C0 steppings will have to be sold first. Might take a few weeks for the high volume retailers to clear out the old and bring in the new. My batty prediction is that the 3.4E will be a good bet for 4 gig if you are willing to invest in good cooling.

Shipping of the D0 stepping is said to begin shipping (retail) not until May. Testing to last between March and April. The main improvement would be better use of energy (less heat), and probably higher yield rates.
Grrrrr... my bad... was hoping for March, but I guess May makes more sense because that's often when Intel releases a new CPU speed and has a price drop (beginning of their 2nd quarter).

May!!!! that's forever. They will probably have Flying cars by may!!!
haha
flying cars, yet only 3.4ghz processors.... how sad the progress is.
i hope its not til may. isnt the 3.4 coming out in march? i would think thats when the new stepping would be... unless they are still using the old C0 stepping on the 3.4
- edit -
doh, nevermind. i just read the article saying may.. damn :/

That basicly means no 3.4ghz prescotts before that either? Was it released yet, or just the 3.4C?
