Ok, First the Good News.. I am being Gifted a PIII Xeon 700 1MB Cache Processor, which is fabulous when I looked up the price that this sells for, All I have to do is help the guy build a machine with the remaining 4 that he has.
I have been looking around for information on overclocking the xeon, with little to no results. I know that there are many newer Xeon boards that support 133FSB, and I realize that this is probably too big a jump to overclock as it would jump from 700mhz to 931MHZ if i could overclock it that high. My question is, do you think there is a chance in hell that i could get it to clock that high, and also does this processor have other available multipliers enabled? Like Instead of 7X133=931mhz could I use a multiplier of 6.5X133=864.5 Mhz.. This might be a more realistic speed to try overclocking to, dunno.
Oh, Also, to run the cpu at 133 bus instead of 100fsb, do i need to put tape over one of the goldfinger pin things?
If you are overclocking a xeon, feel free to reply and let me know what your results have been, and possibly what mb you are using.
Thanks....
Bob
I believe all intel processors are multiplier locked so you would have to use 7.
I doubt if you can overclock it very far but its a super awesome chip as is.
Dont wanna sound cheeky but.....the best bet with that chip would be to sell it.YOu would prolly get enuff cash for a good cpu and mobo. Those xeons sell for a lot, and ill bet the mobo's for em arent overclockin boards too.
Just a suggestion, might be worth it if u can get a high end p3 and board, or even a tbird.
actually i think you should keep it because xeons are great processors in my opinion. overclocked or not you will probably out perform most people.

I have been told xeons are not multiplier locked. and their is a good board you can get for a single proc and it has lots of fsb options.(more than others) Its called the ATC6400 440GX (PII/III/Xeon ATX Motherboard) hope that helps , and for ocing i would recommend taking off the regular therrmal pase and put some arctic silver on there. also you could try mounting 2x 80mm fans on it cause they go so much room on the heatsinks!! good luck, and let me know how it works out!!

Definately keep your Xeon cpu. It gives you more bragging rights than a 1 gig P3. Besides today's processors are mostly being held back by memory, that's why on die cache gives such huge performance increases. With 1 meg cache at full speed your computer will screammmmm!!!!!!!!!!

All good points each of you.. I have considered both selling it, and keeping it.. So far I am still convinced to keep it, at least long enough to build a system. If I don't like it, I can always auction it off.
I already thought about popping it apart and doing some serious cooling modifications. New heatsink grease, possibly adding a waterblock.. (which will have to be a custom job, as I do not know of any Xeon waterblocks on the market). If not a waterblock, definetly some fans to blow on the heatsink.
I figure I am going to have to devise some way to cool the cache on the chip more than usual since there is so much of it.
Hmmm the Xeon chip is Big in size, maybe a coldplate, and 2 156W Peltier elements, not too sure how I would get enough power to run them.. But what the hell, lets have an overkill dream. If I went that route, without a doubt I would need to use watercooling.
Oh and without a doubt, would have to build it in a clear case just to prove what was in it.
Looking on the net for a good price on that ATC 6400 mb.. might have to order overseas to get a good price. So far I have found it on ebay, and a few other sites like Ubid and others. most sites i see a price for this board is out the roof expensive. one site had $345 on it.. NO WAY!
Will take a while, but I will keep the group updated on the progress. Only thing holding me back is finding the mb and some $ for other items needed. Fortunately, I am using this as an upgrade to my existing system, so I already have items like scsi cd writers, dvd drive, 30 gig HD not scsi, and a measely 512 megs of ram..
Figure I will need to buy a MB, cooling equipment, Power supplies, and stuff to make a clear case.. Hmm those rounded cables looked nice.. Sheesh, its always something to spend $..
I might be getting the cpu free, but all the crap i have to buy to use it is going to cost me isnt it....
Lol
Any more ideas gang?

Keep that Xeon, you'll thank me later. I've got a pair of 800 1MB L2 Xeon's and it's the fastest NT 4 Server box I'VE ever seen. Simply awesome.

d00000d! You're getting a 1MB Xeon for free? If you sell it , I swear I'll hunt you down and kick you in the head!
Okay, just kidding....
But this certainly is an opportunity! I'd have to say I'm awfully jealous that you're going to have a Xeon to work with. It's certainly not the same ole' Duron/Multiplier or Celly/FSB game to play now, is it? There's a lot to learn from using something like this and probably a lot of (expensive) fun to have with it! I've never been a strict follower of AMD or Intel, as that would limit one to the cool stuff they could do with their equipment ( although AMDs just tend to be cheaper to play around with), and having a Xeon to OC would make my week!
They are awesome CPUs for sure. I work for Compaq Direct in the server division... where we build Proliant Servers and Workstations. So I get to work with those bad boys every day. Actually the kick ass ones are the Xeon 700s with 2mb of cache. Gotta laugh when someone says how fast their TBird is running. Hmmm... wonder how bad it would stomp a Proliant Server that has 8 Xeon 700mhz/2mb CPUs, 18gb of memory, and say... 30 or so 36.4gb Ultra Wide SCSI 3 hot swap hard drives running in RAID 5 on 5302 Smart Array controllers?

I want one of those!!!!! ;D
The Iwill DCA-200 board has 112 and i think 124 bus speeds to play with. The board is probably fastest thing for xeons but uses Rimms (I840 chipset). Im pretty sure even the xeons are multiplier locked.

try and get a board with voltage ajustments and speeds in between 100 and 133

I want two of those!

Hey everyone,
Thought I would do a followup message on the project. I am in the works now of ordering parts for everything and so far so good. I have made a few decision changes on memory and other stuff. I just noticed today how much memory has dropped. WOW. I cant believe it. As it stands, if I get the ATC6400 mb i think it was, I am going to get a total of 2 gigs of ram to install. Why?
CAUSE ITS CHEAP!!
The computer case has been picked and its going to be a clear acrylic model that shows everything. I havent decided yet whether to buy one already made, or if i want to take the time and build the case myself. I have the complete plans to build one from scratch courtesy of the clearpc website. I made copies of their entire site starting from day one and the photos had the measurements of each of the boards. REAL SMART guys!
I am in the process of looking for a high wattage power supply and so far the best I have found, I think was a 635 watt power supply. If you have seen anything else like this, let me know. I do think that I am going to disable the onboard IDE and opt either for scsi everything or go with an addon ata100 raid card. The mb only supports dma33.. oh well.
Will let yall know whats up, I found a company called plywood and plastics here in the richmond area and am going to contact them on pricing on making the case.
Wish me luck......
Bob
