I've searched this topic to death on this forum and still can't figure this out. Here's how the problem started. I unhooked my current CD-RW to test an old hard drive. The hard drive was detected without a problem and everything was great untill i pluged my CD-RW back in. The CD-RW shows up in BIOS, but won't work in windows. In the device manager the driver shows up, but there's an exclamation mark on the driver and it says that widows cannot find it. I've triple checked the jumpers to make sure they were on master, even though the CD-RW is the only drive on that particular channel. I've tried both IDE ports, no change. I've used different IDE cables that i know work, no change. The funny thing is, when i plug the old hard drive back in on either IDE port, the HDD is detected without a hitch. When i plug in an old DVD-ROM, I get the same symptoms as with the CD-RW. Shows up in BIOS, driver is installed, but still not detected by windows. Any suggestions? I'd really like to avoid re-installing windows just to fix this problem.

have you tried deleting your IDE controllers from your device manager and then restarting? Windows should then redetect everything .

I deleted the Primary and Secondary IDE controllers and left the VIA Bus master IDE controller, re-booted and still have the same problem. Detected in BIOS, drivers are installed, but has exclamation mark and not found by windows.

ummm...there are only 4 things I can think of

1) Try deleting the primary, secondary and the VIA master IDE
2) Check the product's website to see if there's anything there
3) Try clearing your bios.
4) Try a system restore to an earlier point when it was working

a system restore did the trick, thank you.
