View Full Version : P3's to become Celerons?
Intel will be phasing out the P3 CPU by the end of this year, what i think will happen is that the P3's will just be sold as a celeron that way better competing with is AMD Durons.
What do you guys think?

They are already doing that for some time now. Intel takes the PIII's which have a bad die/cache, disables half of the 256k (the part where the error is at) makes a few other adjustments like bottlenecking the cache latency and FSB and sells them as a CeleronII. I strongly believe that the latest Celerons with 100Mhz FSB (800 and the new 850) are in fact top-notch PIII's. Many here on this board have stated that the 800 is just a remarked 533a, and the 850 is just a 566. But I don't see any 533a doing a Gig straight out of the box with crap cooling and default Voltages! But ofcourse the PIII remains a far more superior chip...
I still say that the C800E is nothing more than the cC0 533a they never made. They just didn't have that revision when they made the 533a's, thus they never made them.
If there was such a stepping during the production run for the 533a, I'm sure they would be duplicate chips, with different numbers printed on them.

I'm with Mr B.
My cC0 566 runs windows98 at 850 at std volts(1.7), it's just a little unstable when it comes to games, which is the reason I ran it at 1.8Volts. Upped it by .05 of a volt and I've got 1003Mhz Stable (well, as stable as Wimpdows ever is- No crashes- yet and I've been running at 1GHz since Tuesday).
My cooling isn't very extreme, either, just a lapped GlobalWin FKP32 and a few case fans...

as long as they lower the prices of p3s to celeron prices it's fine byb me. p3s are still good chips.

Interesting. When I set my BIOS to defaults on my Soyo 6ba+IV board, it sees my marked PIII 850e as a 566e. Now, The board is a Slot 1 (using a Slocket for the fcpga 850) and Soyo says it supports up to PIII 600 Slot 1 configs.
I have flashed the BIOS to it's current revision and I still see 566e when I revert to defaults. I guess that sort of affirms what Mr. B and everyone else here is saying. NEAT!! <<<I think!

My understanding on the future of the new Celeron is that it will be based on the upcoming Northwood core. There was an article posted on the front page recently to this effect.
As for the P3, it will still see duty in low-end server applications for a while longer because the memory is cheaper than RAMBUS, which the P4 requires right now.
