I'm not sure if this has been covered before, but I'm getting evil thoughts in my head about creating a custom TEC waterchiller, or something like that... which means I'll probably create one within a few months

I just wanted to know if zerex super racing coolant was ok for chillers? It's what I have right now. Is antifreeze a better alternative? Mixing? thanks!
Dan

edit: i'm also looking for prices on pelts, where do you guys buy?

As far as water dhilling goes youd be much better off using a phase change system, pelts are extrememly inneficient and would not be able to sufficiently chill the water without a large amount of them. WWW.dangerden.com sells tecs, their prices are sbout the best you'll get unless you buy in quantity. Most of the stuff on ebay is pretty junky though for a vid card they might work well. My advice would be to use the tec directly on the card. I'm doing that as soon as some additional parts show up.

By the way i noticed your @ uconn. I live in walden apartments off campus.

i want to build a custom res that incorporates two large cold plates and heatsinks, 5 on each side, so that i can wire them up for 120v. are there DC power 12v pelts out there?
also, still wondering about the water additives.

do you mean 12volt max? most pelts max at 15 volts or more, but its not worth running them that high. They are less effecient, at higher voltages, running a pelt around 11.5-13.5 is about where the effeciency is best. Keep in mind this depends on your setup and method of cooling the hot side. check out what me and Iron Hawk did here: http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=270183 we use an 80watter and its sweet spot was around 12.9-13.2

hope that helps.

yes, i have friends that do some water cooling, Iron Hawk used zyrex in his system after testing several other brands/types. It seems to be the best overall. It contains a mild lubricant as well, so it can help your pump live longer too. WaterWetter is good too but i think it has a funky odor to it, it works great in my Z28 though.

crimedog - have you had a look at the chiller than bender is selling in the classifieds? It is almost exactly as you describe... is a water block with 5 air cooled pelts on each side and comes wired for 120vdc.

They are very nice units, I picked one up myself and if you're thinking about building one this would be a heck of a lot easier.

Of course, unless you have something to power 10x55w pelts (550w) you are in for some trouble either way.

Good luck!
