i got a PIII 1GHz all iwant to know is what does the steeping mean? what role does it play in the cpu etc

The first stepping is the first batch of proccesors let out to the public and then as there stepping increase's each step can get a little better. Kind of like when they make a car and it does not change much but that next year would be stepping #2 CPUID can tell you which stepping your proccesor is as long as quite a few other programs found at www.tweakfiles.com

If your easily able to remove your heatsink, their will be a small, back, sticker that will have the "S-Spec" of your processor. Write down all that info and then you will have everything you need to revisit the Intel site and find out which steppin you have.

I think he was asking what does "stepping" mean, not what stepping he has. and to find out what stepping, it'd be easier to d/l the Sisoft Sandra and get the stepping from there instead of removing the HSF.

Agreed! But I saw no mention of the stepping in the original post. Gotta know which stepping you have along w/ knowing what stepping means eh?
